Introduction
Calcium Carbonate is one of the chemical
compounds which act as a shell of
marine organisms, snails and eggshells. Calcium
carbonate is also mainly found in the limestone.
CaCo3 is the chemical formula of calcium
carbonate and it is odourless.
Calcium carbonate is available in three different
mineral types which include calcite, aragonite
and vaterite.
These minerals are found in chalks, limestone and
marble settled rocks
4
Properties of Calcium Carbonate
The compound structure of calcium carbonate is
trigonal which involves in formation of other
structures such as dipyramids, rhombohedron and
scalenohedron.
These compounds are easily soluble in dilute
acids but it is very tough to dissolve it in
water.
Based upon the addition of elements, calcium
carbonate will react to it in different ways and
form different products. For example, when
dealing with acids it gives carbon dioxide.
5
PUREST FORM OF CALCIUM CARBONATE
Aragonite is one of the main forms of calcium
carbonate. These aragonites are formed in water
and marine areas naturally.
It is formed due to some biological and chemical
processes. The source of aragonite is oolitic
aragonites. Oolitic aragonites are egg-shaped
which are naturally formed in the marine areas.
6
INDUSTRIAL APPLICATIONS
For industrial applications, you can use calcium
carbonate as a cement additive and also in
ceramic glass.
Hundreds of things which we use in our daily life
are made with calcium carbonate. Calcium
carbonate also influences some health
applications.
It is added in calcium dietary supplements and
gastric antacids. Consequently, it has some
disadvantages when it overdoses it will lead to
hypocalcaemia.
7
ENVIRONMENTAL APPLICATIONS
CaCo3 is used to neutralizing acidic ecosystems.
It is used to remove harmful sulphur dioxide from
industries.
Calcium carbonate is also found in other planets
especially in mars. The presence of calcium
carbonate in mars will give positive ideas about
the presence of water.
Not only as a chemical compound and movement in
mars, but it is also used in our daily lives. It
plays a major role in preserving bones and
fossils.
