Title: Methane Gas Detectors

1
Methane Gas Detectors
  • - Diamond Science

2
What is Methane Gas Detectors
  • A Methane Gas Sensor is a device used as an
integral part of a fixed gas detection system for
the purposes of monitoring and detecting levels
of methane in air in LEL (Lower Explosive
Limit) levels or in percent by volume levels.

3
How can you measure methane gas?
  • Methane Gas Analysis
  • Non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) analyzers can be
used to measure CH4 because it is an excellent
absorber of infrared energy. Methane in industry
is frequently measured in percent () ranges, but
parts per million (ppm) measurement is also
    possible with IR detectors.

4
What are symptoms of methane gas exposure?
  • Exposure to high levels of methane can cause
  • Suffocation.
  • Loss of consciousness.
  • Headache and dizziness.
  • Nausea and vomiting.
  • Weakness.
  • Loss of coordination.
  • Increased breathing rate.

5
What happens if you inhale too much methane?
  • High levels of methane can reduce the amount of
oxygen breathed from the air. This can result in
mood changes, slurred speech, vision problems,
memory loss, nausea, vomiting, facial flushing
and headache. ... Skin or eye contact with
liquefied methane released under pressure may
    cause frostbite.

6
Is methane gas harmful to humans?
  • Methane gas is relatively non-toxic it does not
have an OSHA PEL Standard. Its health affects are
associated with being a simple asphyxiant
displacing oxygen in the lungs. ... Methane is
extremely flammable and can explode at
concentrations between 5 (lower explosive limit)
    and 15 (upper explosive limit).

7
How strong is methane as a greenhouse gas?
  • Methane in the Earth's atmosphere is a strong
greenhouse gas with a global warming potential
(GWP) 84 times greater than CO2 in a 20-year time
frame methane is not as persistent a gas as CO2
(assuming no change in carbon sequestration
rates) and tails off to about GWP of 28 for a
    100-year time frame.

8
What is the chemical makeup of methane?
  • Methane (US /'m??e?n/ or UK /'mi??e?n/) is a
chemical compound with the chemical formula CH4
(one atom of carbon and four atoms of hydrogen).
It is a group-14 hydride and the simplest alkane,
and is the main constituent of natural gas.
