INTRODUCTION
Lubricants are very important for any machine and
the components in it. Lubricants play several
functions which make sure the machines remain in
smooth condition and there is no damage done to
its components. There are five basic functions
performed by lubricants which will be discussed
in this presentation.

Reducing friction
Reducing friction is the primary function of any
type of lubricant. By reducing friction, a
lubricant avoids damage to the components of an
engine or any other type of machine. In the
absence of a lubricant, the metal parts rubbing
against each other can get damaged and cause heat
and other problems to the machine.

The cooling effect
Lubricants also create a cooling effect in a
machine. The heat created when the components of
a machine work in close contact, is later
transferred to the oil cooling system. It makes
the machine to cool down and reduce the
temperature.

Cleaning job
Especially in case of turbine engines, oils and
lubricants also clean the engines by washing away
the metal particles resulting due to the friction
and rubbing of the metal components. It makes
sure the engine remains clean, hence its life
will be enhanced.

Avoids corrosion
A lubricant plays a very important function of
avoiding corrosion and wear and tear. It makes
the surface smooth so that there is less or no
corrosion. By doing so, a lubricant protects an
engine and its components from wearing down soon.

Provides sealing
A lubricant also plays the role of sealing
element for the turbine compartments. It prevents
the oil from flowing out of the compartments. In
this manner, it not only remains in the place
where it must be but also makes sure it is not
wasted.

Lubricants are very important for safe and smooth
running of a machine or an engine. It plays a lot
of important functions that benefit and
facilitates the long life of the machine. Using
the lubricants, preserving it and changing when
