- The Nanda Devi National Park or Nanda Devi
Biosphere Reserve, established in 1982 is a
national park situated around the peak of Nanda
Devi (7816 m) in the state of Uttarakhand in
northern India. - The National Park was inscribed a World Heritage
Site by UNESCO in 1988. - It was later expanded and renamed as Nanda Devi
and Valley of Flowers National Parks in 2005.

- A national park is a large area of land which is
protected by the government because of its
natural beauty, plants, or animals, and which the
public can usually visit. - National parks are often made to protect the
animals that live inside them or the land itself.
- Most of the landscapes and their accompanying
plants and animals in a national park are kept in
their natural state. - The first one established (in 1872) was the
United States Yellowstone National Park.

6Brief History of Nanda Devi National Park
- The first recorded attempt to explore the
sanctuary was in 1883 by W. W. Graham, who could
proceed only up to Rishi Ganga. - The Nanda Devi basin was declared as Nanda Devi
Sanctuary in 1939. - Sir Edmund Hillary has described that the Nanda
Devi Sanctuary is God-gifted wilderness-Indias-tr
aining ground for adventure in his
autobiography. - The park became a world heritage site in the
year 1988.
7Layout of Nanda Devi Sanctuary
- The Nanda Devi Sanctuary within the National Park
can be divided into two parts, Inner and Outer. - The Inner Sanctuary occupies roughly the eastern
two-thirds of the total area, and contains Nanda
Devi itself and the two major glaciers flanking
the peak, the Uttari (north) Rishi Glacier and
the Dakshini (south) Rishi Glacier. - The Outer Sanctuary occupies the western third
of the total sanctuary, and is separated from the
Inner Sanctuary by high ridges, through which
flows the Rishi Ganga.

domestic airport to the Nanda Devi National Park,
some 295 km away.
Nearly 276 km away, Rishikesh Railway Station is
the closest to Nanda Devi National Park.
Metalled roads are there till Joshimath from
where one has to trek to reach this place.

- Nanda Devi National Park is one of the best
Himalayan treks in India. - Flora More than 312 floral varieties are seen
here such as rhododendron, fir, and birch. - Nanda Devi and Valley of Flowers National Park
Displays varieties of beautiful and exotic
flowers like blue poppy, mayapple, and Brahma
Kamal. - Fauna Nanda Devi National Park has globally
threatened species that include the snow leopard
and Himalayan musk deer.
