Description:

The umbilical cord is a tube-like structure connecting the foetus to the placenta in mother's womb, providing nutrients and removing waste from baby. Cord blood, which is also called "placental blood", is blood that remains in the umbilical cord and placenta following the birth of a baby and after the umbilical cord is cut after delivery. – PowerPoint PPT presentation

1
Stem Cell Therapy Heart or Hype?
  • The stem cell therapy is constantly emerging and
there are newer studies every day. Lets
    familiarize ourselves with it.
  • An in-depth study in the future will ensure
    proper identification of molecular differences,
that will allow a fundamental redefinition of
diseases at the molecular and cellular levels. It
will also enable identification of matching
characteristics of patients to set the strategies
    for treatment.

2
What are Stem Cells?
  • Stem cells are a unique type of cells which can
cater to treating various diseases. They also
have the ability to differentiate themselves into
one or more types of cells.
  • While treating an injury or a disease, stem cell
undergoes cell division and gives rise to one
daughter stem cell and one progenitor cell. A
progenitor cell form itself into a fully
differentiated state, before that its just an
    intermediate cell type.
  • Stem cells have different types based on their
origin such as embryonic stem cells (ESCs) or as
    adult stem cells (ASCs).

3
How is a Normal Heart Cell?
  • A human heart has the tendency to grow or renew
itself. The number of hearing cells keeps on
increasing while the baby is still located in the
    womb only.
  • Along with the increase in our age the size of
heart cells increases which becomes a deciding
factor in determining the growth of heart. The
basic characteristic of a healthy heart is that
there is a small number of changed heart cells.
  • From current data, we can see that the renewal of
heart cells is dependent on the pre-existing
    proliferation of heart cells.

Benefits of Cell Stem Therapy for Heart, If any -
  • Despite many remarkable successes in the field of
    translational cell-based therapies for
    cardiovascular disorders, there are many
questions remaining to be answered. The response
or benefits of stem cells treatment depends
largely on the interactions between the delivered
stem cells and the cells of the host. It is a
certain way makes cell-based therapy dependent on
the host rather than on pharmacological therapy.
  • Most clinicians have been using adult stem cells
from the BM, from the past decade. Theyre
largely favoured because of their autologous
nature and ease of isolation. However, the aim of
regenerating cardiac muscle in humans has not
    been achieved yet.

5
Benefits of Stem Cell Therapy
  • With the purpose of providing individualized
treatments, there should be more research held in
the field of stem cell therapy.
  • Certain factors influence the disease prognosis
and thus, the clinical outcome varies, both with
the donor stem cell function and genetic
    background of the individual host.
  • The outcome of treatment would be varying from
person to person, hence a firm understanding
    coupled with personalized health interventions
    like cell-based therapies are needed.

6
Benefits of Stem Cell Therapy
  • Stem cell treatment and other cell-based
treatments will work better if theyre looked
    with a personalized approach.
  • Factors like the heterogeneity among patient
factors and the biology of different stem cell
    types enhance the personalized approach.
  • Stem cells have the capability to regenerate
damaged myocardium. In the future, it might be
able to fulfil the unmet clinical needs of people
    with ischemic heart disease.
