One of the most internationally infamous
shipping disasters of all time is the sinking of
the HMS Titanic, which occurred in 1912 on the
ocean liners maiden voyage. More than 1,500
people died in the accident, making this one of
deadliest marine disasters to occur in peacetime
in the modern era.
HMS Titanic At the time of sailing, the HMS
Titanic was the larg- est ship afloat. She car-
ried a total of 20 lifeboats which, due to

3maritime regulations, was only sufficient for
approxi- mately a third of her total ca- pacity
of people and half of those actually on board.
There were safety features fitted that were
advanced for the time, which included watertight
compartments and doors that could be remotely
activat- ed. However, when disaster struck, it
would be the lack of lifeboats that sent so many
to their deaths.

Iceberg Collision On the 14th of April 1912, just
four days into the Titanics Atlantic crossing,
the ship struck an iceberg that damaged the hull
and left five watertight compartments open to
the water. While efforts were made to evacuate,
there were still more than a thou- sand
individuals on board when the ship finally went
under.

International maritime safety regulations were
improved after the sinking of the Titanic.
