About North Yorkshire 3 Peaks challenge
  • While the North Yorkshire 3 Peaks
challenge isnt quite as demanding as some other
hiking challenges in the UK, youll still have to
think about how youll make it across. Most
experienced hikers will bring the absolute basics
with them a lightweight raincoat, sturdy boots
and a backpack full of knick knacks, but
newcomers to hiking may not be aware of what you
    need to bring with you.
  • If you or a fellow hiker has a medical
condition that can impact their performance like
diabetes, allergies or a heart condition, the
issue gets even more complicated as you need to
factor in medical supplies beyond the basic first
aid kit. However, every prospective hiker should
have these in their backpacks or on their person

Food and Drink
  • A fairly obvious choice, but some
hikers forget to bring food and drink with them,
or bring food that wont be suitable for others
(meat products for vegetarians and some
religions, for example). If youre packing food
for others, you need to factor in their dietary
needs and preferences, since it may be several
hours before you reach a village or pub, and
hunger pangs arent very fun to deal with while
    hiking.
  • For people without food allergies or
other health considerations, a Trail Mix of
dried fruits and nuts is a great, portable snack
thats high in energy, lasts a long time, and is
easy to find in supermarkets. A flask of boiling
water can come in handy for a number of things,
from a spot of tea or coffee to instant noodles.

2. Basic Medical Supplies and Training
  • While some people can easily walk off a
scrape or bruise, there are other physical
injuries that can occur that require urgent care.
In most circumstances, you wont need a First Aid
Kit, but its better to be safe than sorry. If
members of your hiking team have health
considerations, make sure they have brought their
medication with them, as they cant afford to
have medical emergencies like hypoglycemia or
anaphylactic shock halfway up a peak.

3. Flashlights
  • Flashlights are extremely important if
youre planning an overnight stay, or expect it
to get dark early. While the UK tends to stay
bright until around 10PM in June, hiking closer
to the winter solstice means you need to prepare
for the early dusk and late dawn. The ground
under you can be dangerous if you dont know
where youre stepping, such as marshes and bogs,
sheer drops and potential tripping hazards, so
having a tool for illumination of your
    surroundings is essential.

4. Phones
  • Most people will already be carrying
their phone with them as a force of habit, but
being able to call emergency services is always
important, regardless of how short your hike will
be or how far you are from civilisation. Phones
are also our one-stop-shop for everything
hiking guides and maps can be downloaded to our
device, nearly every phone comes with a
flashlight, GPS and Map Compass App, as well as
a camera to get some beautiful shots of the
    Yorkshire Wilderness.

6. Sunscreen
  • As great as phones can be, they have
their limitations poor 4G reception, battery
life, and rain and mud can potentially damage
them. Every competent tour guide should already
have a map and compass with them, but if youre
going it alone or outside of the tour guide
system, its another thing you should always pack.
  • The higher you go, the more likely
youll be to get sunburnt, particularly on sunny
days. While sunburn is usually not a big issue in
our rainy, overcast part of the world, we tend to
underestimate the power of the Sun during summer,
and especially during heatwaves. Theres nothing
worse than waking up with a sore and tender neck,
shoulders and arms after what felt like a fairly
normal day of weather, so do yourself a favour
    and bring sunscreen with you.
