Title: The Dog Breeding Industry

1
The Dog Breeding Industry
2
Introduction
  • Breeding and sale of dogs have skyrocketed to a
high-level commercial venture in India. Due to an
enormous demand for puppies of specific breeds
from prospective pet parents, thousands of
breeders and pet shops have cropped up in this
    multi-crore industry.
  • As a result, breeders have started backyard
breeding in the most unhygienic conditions,
cruelly exploiting the animals for easy money.
Lets walk through some legal steps taken by the
government of India to check illegal breeding,
ethical breeding as well as the consequences.

3
Ethical Breeding
  • Breeding in India is not illegal but there are
laws in place to keep the industry in check.
Breeders involved in ethical breeding need to
    keep the following in mind-
  • Any female dog can be bred only once in a
    particular season.
  • Female dogs should have a veterinary health
    certificate before breeding.
  • Breeding must be done only from sound pack of
    good temperament.

4
Government Issued Directives
  • The Animal Welfare Board of India has a set a few
guidelines and rules for breeders and the sale of
animals. A few of them are-
  • All persons wishing to breed dogs for commercial
gain must register themselves with the Animal
    Welfare Board of India.
  • All licensed pet shops shall procure pups from
    licensed and registered breeders only.
  • There are four breeding techniques out of which
only outbreeding and line breeding are allowed in
    India.
  • Inbreeding and Incest Breeding are banned in
    India.
  • A puppy should not be sold before 45 days.

5
Dangers of Inbreeding
  • Inbreeding is the process by which animals are
mated with very close relatives, sometimes within
their litter itself. This is one of the most
popular ways of dog breeding among breeders, even
though it is banned in India.
  • This method makes dogs vulnerable to genetic
defects and diseases. Due to such breeding, there
is a significantly higher chance of developing
    various different congenital conditions including
problems with the eyes, hips, spine and
    breathing.

6
DOs while adopting a pet
  • Pet parents should do an in-depth research before
bringing the pet home. Gain some basic knowledge
about the lifespan, dietary needs and
breed-related issues before making the big
    decision.
  • Make sure that the breeder is licensed or
registered with the state Animal Welfare Board
and also ask for the medical report of both the
mother and the puppy. Be informed about the
various vaccinations which should be provided to
    your dog.
