Title: History and Some Collectible Rapiers

1
RAPIERS
2
What is a Rapier?
  • Rapiers is a long, narrow sword with a fairly
    edgeless blade, a tapering cross-section and a
    very sharp point.
  • The rapiers may differ in their lengths, shapes,
    width and hilt configurations.
  • Overall, a rapier fast thrusting weapon that is
thin and light to handle and ideal for unarmored
    one-to-one combat.

3
Earlier Versions
  • The earlier versions introduced in the 15th
century were deemed suitable for both military
and civilian use because of its limited slashing
    and slicing.
  • They had sharp edges but were meant for thrusting
    exclusively.
  • The sharp edges meant to discourage the opponent
from grabbing the Rapier with their off hand.
  • Some evidence shows that the sharp edges allowed
    easy sliding into the body.

4
The Evolution
  • At first, the Rapier was a offense weapon and an
additional dagger or buckler shield in the left
    hand was used to parry.
  • With the decrease in size and increase in the
agility of the Rapier, parrying using the blade
itself was introduced. This meant more contact
with the opponents blade and hence, more hand
wounds. This led to the addition of crosses and
rings to the Rapier for protecting the hands.
  • The protections then evolved into more elaborate
    spiraling crosses and swept hilts.
  • Later, the wielders opted for a more practical
cup hilt. A cup hilt was a less aesthetic curved
    metal disk above the cross.
