About This Presentation
Title:

Why Sleep Apnea a New threat to life ?

Description:

On average, humans spend about 25% to 35% of their lives sleeping. Obesity in our children is occurring at a higher rate than ever before, and we see the rate of sleep apnea increasing in children as well. Sleep apnea is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts. If you snore loudly and feel tired even after a full night's sleep, you might have sleep apnea. The main types of sleep apnea are Obstructive Sleep Apnea, the more common form that occurs when throat muscles relax. To know More: – PowerPoint PPT presentation

    obesity.
  • The rate of sleep apnea seems to be rising is
much more a function of expanding knowledge of
the illness and its identification than
    increasing prevalence.
  • On average, humans spend about 25 to 35 of
    their lives sleeping.
  • Obesity in our children is occurring at a higher

COMPLICATIONS
  • Daytime fatigue Repeated awakenings associated
    with sleep apnea
  • make normal,
    restorative sleep impossible, making
  • severe
    daytime drowsiness, fatigue and irritability.
  • High blood pressure Obstructive sleep apnea
    might also increase
  • your
risk of recurrent heart attack, stroke.

How Doctors Diagnose Sleep Apnea
  • Medical History
  • Information that you provide, such as signs
and symptoms that you are experiencing.
  • Physical Examination
  • Doctor will look for signs of other
conditions that can increase your risk for sleep
apnea, such as obesity, large tonsils, narrowing
of upper airway, or a large neck circumference.
  • Sleep Studies
  • Doctor may be able to diagnose mild,
moderate, or severe sleep apnea based on the
number of sleep apnea events you have in an hour
    during the sleep study.

8
Tests to detect Sleep Apnea
  • Nocturnal Polysomnography
  • monitors your heart, lung and brain activity,
breathing patterns, arm and leg movements, and
blood oxygen levels while you sleep.
  • Home sleep tests
  • measure your heart rate, blood oxygen level,
    airflow and breathing patterns.

9
TREATMENT
  • The treatment of choice for obstructive sleep
apnea is continuous positive airway pressure
    device .
  • CPAP is a mask that fits over the nose and/or
mouth, and gently blows air into the airway to
help keep it open during sleep.
  • Dental Appliances.
