Title: Things to Know About the Piston Rings
1Things to Know About the Piston Rings
2 The engine inside your car contains a series of
rings that are called piston rings which regulate
the oil pressure and the amount of oil consumed
by the engine.
3 The piston mainly consists of three rings
compression ring, wiper ring, and oil ring.
4These rings are mainly made of cast iron of fine
grain and sometimes by alloy steel.
5Functions of piston rings
6The main functions of the piston rings are listed
below.
1-Compression gas sealing
2-Proper Lubrication 3-Heat Transfer
4-Support the piston
7Compression gas sealing
8The piston rings seal the cylinder so that
combustion gas generated at the time of ignition
does not leak through the opening between the
piston and the cylinder.
9Such gas leaks results in low output power from
the engine and also increases the fuel
consumption.
10Proper lubrication
11Due to repeated gas ignition, the pistons move up
and down inside the engine at a rate of several
thousand times per minute
12Piston rings adjust the amount of oil to be
poured over the pistons so that they move
smoothly with minimum friction.
13Heat transfer
14During ignition, there is an extreme rise in the
temperature inside the piston and such
accumulation of heat may damage the engine.
15 The piston rings help to release the build-up
heat through the engine walls and fins.
16Support the piston
17 It is required for the piston to not to incline
inside the cylinder and come in contact with the
other parts of the engine.
18 The piston rings support the piston to allow for
a smooth up and down motion without getting in
touch with the engine wall.
19Symptoms of bad piston rings
20The common symptoms of the presence of bad piston
rings in the engine are as follows
1-More Exhaust Smoke 2-Weak
accelaration Power 3-Need of more engine
21More exhaust smoke
22 When there is a lot of exhaust smoke coming out
of the car, it could be the result of bad piston
rings.
23 Bad piston rings allow the engine oil to leak
into the combustion and burn to form a thick gray
and white exhaust smoke.
24Weak acceleration power
25When the piston rings suffer wear and get
damaged, the engine will lose its power due to
the decrease in compression.
26So, when you press the pedal for acceleration,
the car will take a long time to attain the power
and speed up.
27Need of more engine oil
28 The presence of worn piston rings allow the
engine oil to leak into the combustion chamber,
resulting in less oil in the engine.
29In such drip in the oil level, there is need of
regular addition of the engine oil in order to
avoid serious engine problems.
