Title: Adjusting from High School to Postsecondary School

1
Adjusting from High School to Postsecondary School
2
  • Graduating from high school and moving on to a
postsecondary school is likely one of the biggest
changes in your life so far. Whereas it is
definitely something to look forward to, you also
need to take action to ensure that the transition
    is as smooth as possible.

3
Take an Active Role Your Education
  • Talk to your academic advisor about which
courses you should take to meet your educational
and career goals. Pick a balance of courses to
study things that will be interesting and
    engaging as well as useful.

4
  • Remember that you can also talk to your advisor
about other aspects of your education, such as
financing, scholarships, and access to resources.
Your advisor can help you with anything that
doesnt relate to a particular class.

5
Choose the Right Accommodation
  • Finding the right place to live will be crucial
to your success and happiness. Living off campus
is appealing to many students, as it allows them
to create a life away from school.

6
  • Instead of living alone in an apartment,
consider looking for rooms for rent. Hamilton
students can find communities of suites where
they can connect with other students and enjoy
amenities like fitness centres, recreation rooms,
and WiFi all of which make life more
comfortable. Most importantly, choose a McMaster
accommodation close enough to walk or bike to
    campus.

7
Build New Relationships and Maintain Old Ones
  • You may feel lonely at first, due to the lack of
familiar faces. It is important to remember that
everyone is feeling the same. Strike up
conversations with your classmates, people you
meet at events, and other students where you live.

8
  • At the same time, it is important not to leave
your old life behind. Stay in contact with
friends from high school and find out how theyre
doing. They may have their own tips about how to
    adjust to the changes.

9
Talk to Your Teachers
  • It is also critical to build relationships with
your instructors. If you ever have doubts about
an assignment, a project, or even a topic you
discussed in class, reach out. If you are looking
to continue your education after you graduate to
gain a masters degree or Ph.D., it is extra
important that you know the teachers and teaching
    assistants well.

10
  • Changing from high school to postsecondary
school is a big deal. However, employing just a
few tactics will ensure that the transition is
smooth and that you succeed with your education.
