When it comes to managing major construction
projects, its essential to have a Project
Management Office (PMO) in place to create and
oversee an effective management system to
facilitate the successful execution of the
various project and program management
activities. A PMOs functions will vary depending
on the type of PMO in place. Common PMO types
include Supportive, Controlling, Directive,
Strategic, and Blended PMOs. A Blended PMO covers
all of the functions offered by the other PMO
types and is also known as an Enterprise Project
Management Office (EPMO).

The Project Management Institutes Pulse of the
Profession 2016 found that organizations which
recognize the strategic role of an EPMO and align
it to strategy successfully complete 27 more
projects and report 42 fewer projects with scope
creep. An EPMO enforces project management,
governance, transparency, and accountability best
practices to ensure the successful delivery of
the strategic initiatives and projects identified
by the Strategy Management Office (SMO). The EPMO
is also responsible for developing and retaining
qualified project management team members as well
as taking ownership of the project management
information system (PMIS).
