1- SHIELDED METAL ARC WELDING ELECTRODES
2WHAT IS AN ELECTRODE?
- An electrode is used to conduct current through a
work piece to fuse two pieces together.
3PARTS OF ELECTRODES
- CORE WIRE- The metal part
- FLUX OR COATING- The outer layer part
4TYPES OF ELECTRODES
- E-6010
- E-6011
- E-6013
- E-7018
- E-7024
5USES APPLICATION
- E6010 - An aggressive, digging rod that is DC
only does not weld on AC and some inverters do
not burn this rod well. This is a digging
penetrating rod and is designed for putting the
root bead on the inside of a piece of pipe.
6USES APPLICATION
- E6011 - This electrode is used for all-position
AC welding or for welding on rusty, dirty,
less-than-new metal.
7USES APPLICATION
- 6013 - This is an all-position, AC or DCEP
electrode used by farmers for years. It makes a
smooth bead but does not dig through rust or
paint. for welding clean, new sheet metal.
8USES APPLICATION
- E7018 - This welding electrode is used for pipe
welding and structural steel welding and all
kinds of repair welding. A low-hydrogen, usually
DC, all-position electrode used when quality is
an issue or for hard-to-weld metals.
9USES APPLICATION
- E7024 - Typically used to make a large weld with
AC or DCEP in plate that is at least ¼" thick,
This rod is only for flat and horizontal
weldingforget about using it for overhead or
vertical up.

11AWS ELECTRODE CLASSIFICATION
The core wire conduct current of the welding arc
and supplies the filler metal to produce the weld.
12AWS ELECTRODE CLASSIFICATION
The heat of welding brakes the flux welding down
to produce the shielding gas to protect the arc
and molten weld puddle from oxygen and nitrogen
in the atmosphere.

24CRITERIA FOR SELECTING ELECTRODES
Tensile strength The capacity of metal to
resist being pulled apart.
25TENSILE STRENGTH
Match to base metal or match the min. of tensile
strength of the electrode to the tensile strength
of the base metal. How ever if you working low
alloy steel in E60 type of electrodes should be
sufficient because to produce weld with the min.
tensile strength of 60 thousand per square inch.
26CRITERIA FOR SELECTING ELECTRODES
Base metal composition - match the electrode to
the base metal to ensure sound weld. There are
several test you can make to determine the base
metal composition with the reasonable degrees of
the certainty.
27IDENTIFICATION OF METALS
Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals
Ferrous metals are metals having a high iron
content and they are usually magnetic.
Non-ferrous metals are those metals which contain
no appreciable amount of iron, these include
copper, nickel, aluminum, etc.
