There are certain processing techniques that are
used to manufacture composite components and comp
ression. Such include heat and the application of
pressure to create components that are robust
and have relatively low cycle t imes.

For the materials that are used in the compressio
n molding process, SMC ( Sheet Molding compound)
and BMC( Bulk Molding Compound) are common. Such
materials consist of glass f iber reinforcing f
i l lers, strands, pigments, additives, and last
ly resin in different forms.

SMC BMC are a blend of f i l lers, resin,
and reinforcement that is molded to form a useful
component. Typically, SMC is a sheet made up of r
esin reinforced with glass f ibers. I t is then
converted into mold and compression
molded. BMC is a blend of uncured resin reinforce
d with glass f ibers that are injected into the
mold.

As opposed to SMC, I t is not essential to recours
e to maturation and as a result, BMC formulation
s contain more f i l ler content. Usually, the f
i l ler is calcium carbonate and
the resin can be polyester, epoxy, urea, vinyl e
ster, melamine, or polyurethane. With reinforcem
ent content varying f rom 10 - 20 , BMC
ideally suits injection molding and
compression.

When i t comes to distinguishing
the features of SMC and BMC, the former possesses
long f iber length and higher f
iber content. I ts r ich characteristics lead to
better strength, both tensile and f
lexural. SMC- made components are widely used in
t rucks, passenger cars, agricultural
machinery, building façade panels, and electrica
l cabinetry.

Due to smaller f iber length and lower f
iber content, injection molding with
BMC can be made to f i l l inner cavities and no
t so thicker parts. BMC- made components f
ind their utilization in appliance components, au
to engine throttle bodies, and headlamp reflector
s.

The molding process ideally suits the
formation of products that need a few
common characteristics including unique design fe
atures, low unit cost, l ightweight with excelle
nt strength- to- weight ratio, and excellent aco
ustic, and thermal performance.
