Title: A Short Guide to Prostate Cancer Symptoms

1
Ways To Prevent Prostate Cancer
The prostate is a walnut-sized gland located
between the penis and bladder. The gland is
situated in front of a mans rectum. The main
purpose of the prostate is to secrete a fluid
that nourishes and protects sperm. When a man
ejaculates, the prostate stars squeezing fluid
into the urethra and expels it with sperm as
semen. As men age, they are more prone to
developing problems affecting prostate
with cancer being the most severe. Is there any
way to prevent this serious disease? The primary
focus of this post is to discuss prostate cancer
symptoms and prevention options for healthier
life. How Common Is Prostate Cancer? Prostate
cancer is widely prevalent and according to the
American Cancer Society, about 161,360 new cases
of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the US in
2017 while 26,730 deaths will occur. Whats more
one in seven men will be diagnosed with this
severe disease in his lifetime. About six in 10
cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in men
aged 65 or older. The severity of the disease is
best depicted by the fact that prostate cancer is
the third leading cause of cancer in American
men, right behind lung and colorectal cancer.
Early diagnosis is important for successful
treatment, but to get diagnosed patients need to
see their doctor when they notice symptoms of
prostate cancer, which only emphasizes the
importance of getting educated about the problem.
On average, one in 39 men die of prostate cancer
and at this point, there are more than 2.9
million men in the US who came out of this fight
as winners.

  • What Causes Prostate Cancer?
  • Like in many other types of cancer, the exact
cause of prostate cancer is unknown. Scientists
explain that a combination of different factors
plays a role rather than one single cause.
Factors that are associated, and could
    potentially cause this disease, include
  • Family history i.e. youre more likely to develop
prostate cancer if someone in your family
    already had it
  • Mutations in DNA or genetic material because they
make the cells in prostate grow uncontrollably
  • Advancing age
  • Race also plays a role some estimates show that
    Asian-American and Hispanic
  • men have the lowest incidences of prostate cancer
while African-American men are more prone to the
    disease than other races
  • Other factors smoking, obesity, sedentary
    lifestyle, excessive consumption of calcium
  • Symptoms Of Prostate Cancer
  • The earliest stage of prostate cancer is usually
asymptomatic, meaning it doesnt induce some
noticeable symptoms. In the later stages, a
    patient experiences different difficulties. The
most common prostate cancer symptoms include
  • A weak or interrupted urine stream
  • Blood in the urine
  • Burning sensation when urinating
  • Difficulty achieving or maintain an erection
  • Difficulty starting and maintaining urination
  • Difficulty to urinate while standing up

3
  • More advanced stages of prostate cancer may
    include
  • Swelling in the lower extremities
  • Dull and deep pain or stiffness in pelvis and
    lower back
  • Loss of appetite followed by weight loss
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Weakness or paralysis of the lower limbs, usually
    with constipation
  • Remember these symptoms and see your doctor if
you start experiencing them. Timely diagnosis is
the best way for the prostate cancer treatment to
work and beat the disease effectively.
  • How To Prevent Prostate Cancer?
  • Since the exact cause of this disease is unknown,
there is no absolute prostate cancer prevention
method. However, there are many things you can do
to minimize your risk significantly. Here are
    some useful recommendations.
  • Maintain Weight In A Healthy Range

Being overweight or obese increases your risk of
cardiovascular diseases and many other health
conditions including prostate cancer. A growing
body of evidence confirms that obese or
overweight men are at a higher risk of developing
this disease than men who are within a healthy
weight range. Therefore, a great way to
decrease prostate cancer risk is to maintain a
healthy weight or try to slim down if youre
overweight/obese.

Eat More Tomatoes And Red Foods
Tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables
contain a potent compound called lycopene which
functions as an antioxidant. A study whose
findings were published in the Journal of
Nutritional Science and Vitaminology discovered
that consumption of lycopene is strongly
associated with lower risk of prostate cancer.
Bear in mind that the redder the tomato, the
more lycopene it contains. Also, cooking tomatoes
makes it easier for the body to absorb this
antioxidant. Have Some Coffee
Coffee has gotten a bad rep lately, its
demonized even though a wide range of studies
have confirmed its health effects. Of course, it
all comes down to the type of coffee beans you
consume and frequency of consumption. Evidence
shows that
5
drinking four to five cups of coffee every day
has the tremendous prostate cancer prevention
effect. Reduce Intake Of Animal-based Fat
We tend to assume that all fat is bad, but the
reality is that our body needs it to function
properly. That being said, not all fat is created
equal. Multiple studies have revealed that
consumption of animal-based fat increases the
risk of prostate cancer. In addition to meat,
animal-based fat is also present in cheese,
butter, and lard. Whenever possible, strive to
replace animal-based fats with plant-based
alternatives. For instance, you can consume nuts
and seeds instead of cheese, replace butter with
olive oil, opt for fresh produce instead of
prepackaged foods, or choose fruit instead of
candies. Quit Smoking
6
  • Smoking is bad for your lungs, cardiovascular
health, dental health, skin, and your wallet.
This unhealthy habit is detrimental to your
overall health and well being and now you have
yet another reason to ditch it. You see, a
growing body of evidence confirms that smoking
is a major prostate cancer risk factor. Not only
does smoking increase your risk of getting
prostate cancer, but it also heightens the
likelihood of mortality. It is also important to
mention that smokers tend to have an aggressive
    form of prostate cancer.
  • Fortunately, its never too late to change things
around and you can do it by quitting smoking.
Not only does smoking cessation reduce the risk
of prostate cancer (and many other cancers and
diseases), but it also improves the chances of
survival in men who are already diagnosed with
this disease. In one study prostate cancer who
quit smoking for more than 10 years had the same
mortality risk as men who never smoked.
  • Other Things To Do
  • Exercise regularly or strive to be more active
  • Consume a low-fat diet
  • Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables
  • Drink green tea
  • Reduce alcohol consumption
  • Consume zinc-rich foods
  • Get enough sleep
  • Consume sufficient levels of vitamin D
