Hyperacidity
  • Hyperacidity is a common condition wherein a
person experiences some stomach discomfort after
eating a meal, due to the excessive production of
acid during the digestion process. A person may
also experience a bloated feeling or some
gassiness, which can lead to flatulence,
belching or both. A bit of sourness in the mouth
may also be tasted, along with an aftertaste of
what had been eaten after one burp. Hyperacidity,
also known as acid dyspepsia, can also cause
other discomforts, such as appetite loss,
    vomiting, and constipation.

3
Causes of hyperacidity
  • A person may suffer from hyperacidity due to
several causes ranging from lifestyle, eating
habits, various underlying diseases, and taking
certain medications. Some of the main causes of
    the condition include
  • Regular consumption of spicy food, which is high
    in fats
  • Irregular eating habits
  • Excessive fasting and starving
  • Alcoholism and smoking
  • Stress and related disorders
  • Peptic ulcers
  • GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)
  • Stomach cancer

4
Symptoms
  • The symptoms of hyperacidity may vary in
severity. These symptoms may be most prominently
seen a couple of hours after having a meal
  • Nausea and vomiting (may expel blood in extreme
    cases)
  • Sour belching and flatulence
  • Atonic dyspepsia (stiffness in stomach)
  • Indigestion and constipation
  • Loss of appetite
  • Steady pain in the abdomen
  • Feeling of restlessness

5
Treatments
  • To get an effective and permanent treatment of
hyperacidity one must consider all the
possibilities which can initiate the problem to
identify the root cause. There are many remedies
which can provide immediate relief from the
problem but without treating the root cause of
the problem the treatment will not be permanent
in nature. Some commonly associated problems
which may initiate hyperacidity are constipation,
    flatulence, indigestion, malfunctioning of liver
and stress. Hyperacidity in a person having any
of these problems subsides with the treatment of
    the problem itself.
  • Consuming buttermilk after meals is an
excellent remedy for hyperacidity and if taken
regularly can provide effective and permanent
treatment. Eating jaggery or a piece of clove
after meal also helps in treating the problem.
Lemon may be acidic in nature but contains
digestive enzymes and good acid, consuming sweet
lemon juice before meals helps in digesting the
food and nullifying the acid in the stomach.

  • Increased intake of fruits like banana, melon,
pineapple, apple and guava are very useful in
treating the problem of hyperacidity. Consumption
of water shall be paid importance not only to
avoid the excess secretion of acid but also for
good overall health, an adult shall consume 8-10
