What is Piles

• Piles are swellings that can occur inside and
  around the back passage (anus) and the anal
  canal.
• There is a network of small veins (blood
  vessels) within the lining of the anal canal.
  These veins sometimes become wider and engorged
  with more blood than usual. The engorged veins
  and the overlying tissue may then form into one
  or more small swellings called piles.

Signs and Symptoms of Piles

• An individual with piles may experience the
  following symptoms
• Bright red blood after a bowel movement.
• The area around the anus may be red and sore.
• A hard lump may be felt around the anus. It
  consists of coagulated blood, called a thrombosed
  external hemorrhoid. This can be painful.
• Mucus discharge when emptying the bowel.
