  • WBV was originally developed for the Russian
    Cosmonauts ( in the 1960s) in space so that
    their muscles and bone mass wouldn't deteriorate
    at zero gravity conditions -
  • AND IT WORKED! They were able to live in space
    for twice the amount of time without suffering
    the serious health effects of weightlessness (420
    days versus 210 days!)

How does WBV actually work?
  • To make it simple, WBV stimulates the bodys
    natural stretch reflex and causes muscle
    contractions in much the same way that a doctors
    tapping below a patients patella with a reflex
    hammer elicits a knee-jerk response.

  • The stretch reflex is controlled by stretch
    receptors called muscle spindles that are located
    in skeletal muscle. Muscle spindles are usually
    activated when a muscle is under a static stretch
    or is quickly stretched or overstretched, causing
    a reflex contraction of the muscle.
  • With WBV, this reflex action is continually
    stimulated, so a muscle continues to contract and
    relax until the vibration stops. In addition,
    studies have reported that activation of one
    muscle spindle will cause a reflex contraction
    and relaxation in many adjacent muscles.

  • The human body is designed to absorb forces in a
    vertical direction.
  • Shearing or horizontal forces are not as absorbed
    and often result in injury to muscles, ligaments
    and joint capsules.

Most sporting, work and motor vehicles related
injuries are due to large horizontal forces on an
area of the body that breaks the threshold of
the structure that is being stressed (bone,
ligament, tendon).

CONTRAINDICATIONS
  • Include serious cardiovascular conditions,
    pacemakers, pregnancy, recent surgery, epilepsy,
    severe diabetes, acute hernia or the presence of
    metal implants that may loosen. Also patients
    with discopathy, spondylolysis, recent
    infections, active tumors, painful herniated
    disks and recently placed IUDs metal pins or
    plates should avoid WBV therapy.
