Five Reasons to Train for Apocalypse Survival
Another tool is a lightweight tarp, the kind
that you see at the hardware stores for just a
few dollars. This can be used as shelter, a
blanket, or ground cover. If you buy a survival
kit and it has a blanket, is will probably be
made of paper or plastic. Some of your upper end
survival kits do supply tarps and some even tents
with tie down cords. For me personally, the
supplied kit versions have their place, but I
prefer a larger tarp that I can created a tent,
with a floor, and can make a shelter for the
night and have other uses for it during the day.
Did you ever think of commercial quality
heavy-duty trash bags? You can buy from 30 to 100
of them in a small box. They can make an
excellent raincoat by making a few holes for your
head and arms. Make a sleeping bag out of them.
Pull one over your legs, cut a hole through
another one, and slip it over your head. Presto,
something that keeps body heat in and is
waterproof. You can build a container for human
waste that you can seal (human waste can be a
serious problem, even if you are isolated for a
short time).

Hammer, nails, pliers (channel lock type
preferred) screwdriver, gloves and a good knife.
For a hammer, I personally like a claw hammer
with straight claws. Straight claws not only pull
nails, but also can be used similar to a small
hatchet to claw notches in wood or small
branches. You can do a certain amount of prying
with the claw, and if you are near damaged wood
buildings, you can use wood and nails from
damaged structures. With the items above, I could
create a blanket out of the trash bags, a shelter
using some sticks and a rope. If there are no
sticks, I could make a ground cover and shelter
for my family. These items are inexpensive, and
are small. They are inexpensive and small enough
that you can easily keep several sets in
different kits. You can keep some or all of these
items in all of your cars and in your home.

I would keep items such as these in a specific
kit and not part of your regular tools scattered
around with other tools. You want to keep them
portable in case you have to move from your
location quickly. What becomes obvious is that if
you take the time, effort and use your brain, you
can do much better than the standard market
survival kit. Standard marketed survival kits do
have their place, as they are lightweight and
portable, do the planning for you, but they do
not fulfill all that I feel that I would need. It
would never hurt to have a marketed kit along
with your personalized kit available. A Survival
Knife isn't the best choice for cleaning a fish
but it will perform the job when you don't have
an option. If you were in a survival situation
with nothing but a fish and a pair of nail
clippers, you would sure as hell make it work. So
a survival knife is the right tool when your
choices are to use what you have or starve.

Scale the fish The first order of business is to
remove the scales. You will need to put the fish
on a flat surface. If you're in a survival
situation, you almost certainly didn't pack that

Use the unsharpened or back side of your Survival
Knife and scrape the scales off by scraping
firmly from tail to head. Once you have the
scales removed, turn the fish over and repeat the
technique on the other side. A quick rinse in
water will clean away any loose scales left on
the fish. Next you need to remove the guts of the
fish as cleanly as possible to prevent
contamination of the flesh. You will be using the

be careful not to cut in to the intestinal tract
