5Intro to wifi
- Short for wireless fidelity.
- It is a wireless technology that uses radio
frequency to transmit data through the air. - Wi-Fi is based on the 802.11 standard
- 802.11a
- 802.11b
- 802.11g
6Basic working
- No Wiring system
- Radio Waves
- Two-way communication
- Computer Adapter
- Wireless Router
7HOW WIFI WORKS
8WIFI enabled devices
- Computer
- Laptop
- Smartphones
- Printers etc.
-
9IEEE 802.11 standard
- The IEEE 802.11 standard is a set of media access
control (MAC) and physical layer (PHY)
specifications for implementing wireless local
area network (WLAN). - They are created and maintained by
the IEEE LAN/MAN Standards Committee (IEEE 802). - The base version of the standard was released in
1997.
10Requirement Of Hardwares To Connect To A WIFI
Network
- PCI Wi-fi Card
- USB Wireless Adapter
- Hub or Switch
- Wireless router
- Embedded systems
11An embedded RouterBoard 112 with U.FL-RSMA
pigtail and R52 mini PCI Wi-Fi card
12Wireless adapters can plug into a computer's PC
card slot or USB port.
13A wireless router uses an antenna to send signals
to wireless devices and a wire to send signals to
the Internet
14Area coverage by WIFI
- Wi-Fi technology is used to provide Internet
access to devices that are within the range of
a wireless network that is connected to the
Internet. - The coverage of one or more interconnected access
points (hotspots) can extend from an area as
small as a few rooms to as large as many square
kilometres.
15Advantages
- Freedom You can work from any location that you
can get a signal. - Setup Cost No cabling required.
- Flexibility Quick and easy to setup in temp or
permanent space. - Mobile Access Can access the network on the
move.
16Disadvantages
- Speed Slower than cable.
- Range Affected by various medium.
- Travels best through open space.
- Reduced by walls, glass, water, etc
- Security Greater exposure to risks.
- Unauthorized access.
17Basic Security Strategies
- Change the default network name in the access
point. - Change the default access point password.
- Center the access point in the middle of the
building/house.
18HOW TO USE WIFI IN ANDROID OPERATING SYSTEM
19How to turn on/off wifi in Android Devices
- Open the Settings app.
- Turn on WIFI radio .
20How to Connect to a WIFI network
- After turning on WIFI you see a list of networks
. - Choose any one from the list and
- Tap connect .
- If using a secured network then
- Provide proper password.
- Now Enjoy Browse Internet
connect
21Sharing of Data connection in Smartphones
(Tethering)
- Tethering is when you turn your smartphone into a
mobile Wi-Fi hotspot and share your phones 3G/4G
data connection. - Once you've turned tethering on,
- any device with a wireless connection can connect
to the internet via your smartphone's connection.
22What is Next?
- Now, the focus in wireless is shifting to wide
area, i.e., WiMax and LIFI - WiMax short for Worldwide Interoperability for
Microwave Access. - it is defined in IEEE 802.16 standards.
- It is designed to deliver a metro area broadband
wireless access (BWA) service, and is being
promoted by the WiMax Forum. - WiMAX is quite similar to WiFi, but on a much
larger scale and at faster speeds.
23Intro to Lifi technology
- LiFi is a wireless optical networking technology
, - that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for data
transmission. - LiFi is designed to use LED light bulbs similar
to those currently in use in many
energy-conscious homes and offices. - Picture PICTURE

25WIFI Summary
- WiFi is a freedom freedom from wires.
- It allows you to connect to the Internet from
just about anywhere a coffee shop, a hotel
room, or a conference room at work. - it is almost 10 times faster than a regular
dial-up connection.
