Night vision binoculars generally work in two
distinct ways There are those that intensify the
scene being viewed passively through the lenses
while others actively scan the scene in order to
generate infra-red or thermal images. The first
night vision binocular models utilized the
passive technology while the more modern ones are
the active types that scan mages and this makes
them more sophisticated than the former.

The former passive system of night vision
binoculars has a generally wide lens opening so
that it can collect as much light as possible.
The light will then be channeled through a series
of light intensifying filters before it is
finally emitted through a tiny aperture this is
what allows the viewer to actually see in the
dark. Images coming through the passive system
have a greenish tint that comes from those lenses
that filter the light. Trying to correct the
green tone will general obscure the image and
that is the reason they are usually left
unaltered.

On the other hand, the active night vision system
has been designed to seek out for infrared
signatures so as to paint the signal for the
user. These are sophisticated night vision
binoculars that can deliver very clear images
the thermal imaging versions will display a scene
using blotches of color where the bright spots
will be indicating the hot points where a warm
engine or animal could be present.

The only downside of this model is that they
require a source of power and this could become
cumbersome especially when you are out in the
open. The advantage of the active system however
is that it is able to see through dust, fog,
smoke or any other source of visual disturbance
something that the passive system will not. Night

military uses when they have to scan for enemies
in extremely dim conditions.
