  • There are millions of people in the country right
now that are not only parents to their children,
but also taking care of their elderly. In
addition, many of these people are also working.
These people are often deemed the sandwich
generation, so named because they are sandwiched
between caring for their children and their
parents. This can be a stressful task, but there
are some ways to help to balance your life as
both. There a few things that you must know when
becoming a caregiver to a parent, while being
    parent to your own child.

3
Accept the Fact That You Are a Caregiver
  • If you are now a caregiver for your parent, you
must realize your roll. Whether your parent has
been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or another
ailment, this is a role that you will carry out
for the rest of your parent's life. The average
Alzheimer's patient lives eight or more years
after diagnoses. Being a caregiver for these
patients is hard and requires a lot of love and
    patience.

Being a Caregiver Will Effect Your Whole Family
  • While you may be the primary caregiver for you
parent, it will affect your spouse and your
children. You may think that you need to shield
your child from seeing the effects of the disease
on your parent, but allowing them to help in even
a small way can help the child to fully
understand what is happening. Finances will also
be stretched during this time as well. As a
caregiver you may have to either cut back on work
or quit altogether. Unless you parent is somehow
giving you a stipend, this will seriously impact
your finances. Because of this you need to make
sure that you are making time for just you and
your family. If all else fails, set aside a night
a week for your family to spend quality time
together and it is okay to sometimes exclude your
    parent.

5
You Cannot Do This Alone
  • You will need help to be a caregiver. Since
your family is already involved in the care
process, let them help you. Give your kid(s)
small tasks to do. Let others help you. If you
try to do everything yourself, you will find that
it is too much and too stressful. If you are the
primary caregiver, you need to take care of not
only your parent's health, but your health. You
have emotional and physical needs just the same
as your parent. If you become sick, who will be
there for you kids and parents?Just remember
that what you are doing is a good thing. You will
never have a more important job than being a
parent and a caregiver to your parent.
