3Need of testing Jewelry
Knowing if a gemstone used in jewelry is real or
fake is important so that you don't end up paying
more than its value. Why should you be paying a
great amount of money for a fake jewelry? At the
first glance you may not be able to distinguish
between a real and fake gem. So people will need
to look more closely and look for signs.
Imitation or simulated stone looks real but their
physical characteristics are far from real
stones.
4All original stones have some inclusions, which
makes it easier for a gemologist to distinguish
between a real gem and fake gemstone. So if you
are being sold a gemstone that looks too
perfect, it is likely to be a synthetic one that
has undergone many treatments in the lab. Natural
gemstones used in jewelries are ones that are
naturally beautiful, without any enhancements or
treatments
5Testing of Gold
There are four methods of testing gold. 1.
Density. 2.Touchstone. 3.Capacitive
Decay. 4.X-ray florescence Spectrometry. The
criteria used in choosing these four methods were
non destructiveness ease of operation except for
X-ray fluorescence, low cost and portability.
6 The Nomenclature of gold content
The gold content (also known as "fineness") of
karat gold is described in several ways
Percent () is simply the ratio of gold (by
weight) to the total metal present, expressed as
parts of 100. Thus an alloy that is three parts
gold and one part alloy metal is 3/(31 3/4
75/100 75 (by weight). Parts per thousand
(ppt) is similar to percent, but compares the
total metal (by weight) present to 1000,
rather than 100) parts.
7 Diamond Testing methods
1. Ask for a heat probe test. 2. Request
combination diamond/moissanite testing. 3. Get a
microscopic examination. 4. Subject the diamond
to high sensitivity weighing. 5. Inspect the
diamond under ultraviolet (UV) light.
8 Hallmarking
Hallmarking system for silver as well as gold
jewelry sold in India certifying to the purity of
the metal. It certifies that the piece of jewelry
conforms to a set of standards laid by the
Laboratory who test it. The mandatory status of
hallmarking gold jewelry sold in India, although
declared, is still in implementation. But it has
a wide acceptance among the consumers. But still
leads to fake hallmarking of jewelry which is
under the regular scrutiny of the bureau of
Indian Standard.
