COLLEGE MAGAZINE RESEARCH
2
STYLE AND TYPE PHOTOGRAPHY
The photographs use mainly feature medium close
ups of students or activities. This helps the
audience to ascertain a good level of detail to
intrigue them at a glance but not so much that
they are overwhelmed and so dont pick it up.
Activities featured reflect subjects available at
the college, convey an image of success and
relate to the lives of the readers- those who
attend the college.

OVERALL LOOK AND FEEL OF MAGAZINE
Colby college magazine, which is available
online, features clean lines with a professional
feel and to the point pictures. It has a
sophisticated image and works on a basic 4 tone
colour scheme.
Campus life uses a similar clean cut look with a
large key signifier to clearly define the type of
person that it is aimed at, who s inviting in the
audience through direct mode of address. Typical
American football style font is used to greater
reinforce the idea of college lifestyle. The
magazine cover has both formal and informal
elements to it, the smart black white and red
compliments the skin tone and clothes of the key
signifier, making the cover look uniformed. The
appearance and setting of the photograph adds the
less formal feel whilst the text and colour makes
it look more formal. The feel of the magazine
also reflects the feel of the college/university
e.g Priors would be less formal than Haverfords
(see Haverfords design on final slide).

TYPICAL CONTENT
Typical content revolves around the lives and
interests of the students. Helpful tips,
information on the campus and opinion pages
dominate contents , allowing the magazine to
function as a conduit for information and advice
for students. This is mainly because the
magazines are written by the students, who
understand the needs and wants of the student
populous. Competition pages heavily feature also,
usually to win a piece of useful technology.
5
GENERAL TONE OF WRITING
The general tone of writing is mostly informal
and chatty, along the lines of students talking
to each other. Being aimed at students and
written by students, this is an appropriate style
as more formal language is less likely to
interest them.
