Ten Key Facts on Heart Disease in Women
1. Every 4 seconds a woman dies of causes
attributable to heart disease1.
2. In 2009, one in 30 female deaths was from
breast cancer, but one in three was from
cardiovascular disease2.
3. Each year new and recurrent MI and fatal CHD
will impact an estimated 380,000 women3.
4. Women aged 45 years and older are less likely
than men of that age group to survive a year
after their first heart attack2.
5. Only about 33 of all percutaneous coronary
interventions were performed on women in 20102.
6. Almost two-thirds (64) of women who die
suddenly of coronary heart disease have no
previous symptoms4.
7. According to the survey conducted by Mosca et
al. in 2006, only 55 of women knew that cardiac
disorder is the leading cause of death among
women5.

Foreword
The epidemic of cardiovascular diseases in India
is advancingrapidly. The state of affairs has
been challenged in the recentyears by a series
of studies, which shows an alarming rise incases
of Cardio Vascular Disease mainly in women.
The Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) study
reported estimatedmortality from coronary heart
disease (CHD) in India at 1.6million in the year
2000. More women than men now die of
heartdisease. CVD claims life of more women
every year than all formsof cancer combined.
Though CVD is the worlds number one killer but
still the factsabout Heart Disease are
tragically absent from our contemporarypublic
dialogue.
Against this background, the summit is to bring
about steadfastmanagement of CVD in women and
proposing effective healthcaresolutions for
growing concerns about the escalating health
threatsthat it poses.

Disease in INdiAnwomen, intended to map the
trends of cardiovascular diseases (CVD)in Indian
women, covered almost 600 health care
professionals ofmetros and non-metro cities from
across the country, exposed shockingfacts around
womens heart health in India-
54 of cardiologists observed a 16-20 of
overall growth rate in cardiovascular diseases
among women in the last five years.
41 of the doctors claimed an alarming 10-15
growth rate in cardiovascular diseases among the
age group of 20-40 years, the category of women
which was earlier considered protected
from heart ailments.
83 of the doctors believed that Indian women
are ignorant about heart diseases.
76 of the doctors observed that women die of
heart diseases due to late presentation to the
hospital.
66 of the doctors cited that CVD death amongst
women was due to late diagnosis.
