Jennys mom doesnt get tested because
  • Shes afraid of the results
  • Certain worries that come along with being tested
are uncomfortable emotions, such as, anxiety,
uncertainty, feeling a loss of control, losing
self esteem, and the worries about Jennys risk
    of breast cancer.
  • Jennys family had been surrounded by her aunts
beast cancer, which was causing issues at home.
These issues brought a lot of anxiety.
  • BUT
  • Neither Jenny or her mom should be afraid of the
results because now days there are many new and
    effective treatments.

4
Coping with Diagnosis
  • It is normal for women to deny having breast
cancer, it is normal for the patient to get angry
at the doctor, you may get angry at God asking
the question Why did this happen to me? Also,
you feel there is no way out.
  • Oh but there is
  • As hard as it may be for some women, you will
learn to except the truth, and exert your
strength to fight with all youve got.

5
Coping with Treatments
  • It is normal for a person for time off, so simply
asks your family and friends to support you and
relieve you from you chores for a while.
  • Do not take to much time off though, because you
want to remain in as normal state as possible
  • You may be as active and engaged in your life as
    ever.

6
Coping with Fear of Recurrence
  • (After treatment)
  • It is common to feel the same fear again just
because youve been there done that, doesnt mean
it is any easier to cope with these fears again.
  • Learning to deal with the fear of recurrence is a
major challenge. Understand that you are not
alone through this hard time in your life.
  • One may find that you need to fight both the
disease as well as the fear of the disease and
your genetic counselors are there to support you
through this bump in the road.

7
Ten Way to Manage Fear
  • Get to know the people on your medical team on a
    personal level.
  • Find a doctor who you can relate to personally so
they can answer any questions you may have.
  • Find out what to expect this will help to
    minimize surprises.
  • Find a center where the doctors will talk to you
before you go home so you do not have to wait for
    a phone call.
  • Balance things in your planner so that if you
have a test coming up, you wont plan things that
are stressful for you in the same week.
  • If someone approaches you with a sob story about
breast cancer, stop them from telling you and
say, I only listen to stories with happy
    endings.
  • If you reach a difficult point, tell your doctor
so you will be relieved from your burden.
  • Join a support group so you can share your
    feelings from others.
  • Find ways to turn negatives into positives
  • Plan with your doctor about how to receive the
    tests as soon as possible.

Inheritance Genetics
  • I know what youre thinking and yes, breast
    cancer can be inherited
  • Usually when breast cancer is passed down due to
inheritance, the cause is because of abnormality
in the BRCA1 gene and the BRCA2 gene
  • (BRCABReast CAncer)
  • BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes jobs are to keep breast
cells growing correctly and prevent any cancer
    cell growth

10
Scenarios (Aunt Lisas possible causes for breast
cancer)
  • Family history of breast cancer or ovarian cancer
(Most likely will have abnormal BRCA1 or 2)
  • Wasnt passed down, just happened to catch (no
    family history act of god)

    cancer.
  • Along with sedentary lifestyles

specifically the main part of the tumor

    cancer cells after surgery

    of reoccurring cancer
  • Hormonal Therapy Stops abnormal growth of
    breast cancer cells

Why Does it Sometimes not Work
  • Cancer enters blood stream and lymph system
spreading to various parts in the body
  • Sometimes symptoms are not caught early enough
    and cancer becomes uncontrollable
  • If breast has made a cancerous cell before it is
more likely to make more requiring early
