3What is Genetic Counseling?
- Genetic Counselors are health professionals
- Genetic Counselors work as members of a team and
provide information and support to families with
the following conditions - Birth defects, genetic disorders, hereditary
conditions, and cancer - Genetic Counselors identify families at risk,
investigate the issue, interpret information,
analyze patterns, and review options available. - Also provide counseling and support for the
general public.
4What the test results will mean to the family
- Coping with breast caner is hard, but sometimes
the patient is better prepared for the diagnosis
than the people around them - It can affect your friends, family, and loved
ones
5What is out there for those diagnosed with breast
cancer
- There are many discussion groups, chat rooms,
phone lines, email updates and therapy that are
offered to people who need help coping with a
diagnosis - There are many fundraisers, such are the run for
breast cancer, that helps raise money to go to
cancer research

- Lauren Thompson
7If it was not hereditary, what was it?
- High fat diet
- Birth control
- Timing of weight gain
- HRT estrogen
- Working in clothing/textile factories
- Obesity
- Red meat
- Weight gain after menopause
- Active smoking
- Chemical used in deodorant
- Alcohol consumption
- Radiation before the age of thirty
8How can she reduce her chances?
- Eat
- plant foods
- Mushrooms
- Soy
- Green Tea
- Miso Soup
- Fruits and vegetables
- Not smoking
- Strong exercise
- Regular screening tests
- Vitamin D
- No/low consumption of alcohol
- Statins
- Pain Relievers
- Avoiding foods and medicine that contain estrogen
related substances
9Genetics effect on breast cancer

10Can breast cancer be hereditary?
- Yes, breast cancer can be hereditary there have
been two gene discoveries involved with the
cancer BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 - The function of the genes is to control breast
cell growth and division but when a mutation
occurs, there is more risk for breast cancer
(mutated BRCA genes are responsible for ten
percent of breast cancer cases) - People can inherit a breast cancer risk, but not
the disease
11Breast cancer genes
- The BRCA-1 gene was isolated on chromosome 17 (if
a woman tests negative for this gene, she will
not necessarily be free of breast cancer) - The BRCA-2 gene was found on chromosome 13 (this
gene seems to be involved in both male and female
breast cancer) - There are also tumor-suppressor genes, such as
P53 if there is a mutation in this gene there
is a higher risk of getting any kind of cancer - These genes can be inherited as abnormal, or can
be acquired from other factors
12Can males get breast cancer?
- Yes, males can get breast cancer
- Males inherit genes involved with breast cancer
just as females do, and can receive abnormal BRCA
genes - However, the majority of male breast cancer cases
are those who have no gene mutation
13Summary
- Yes, both males and females can get breast cancer
from certain genes. Abnormalities in the genes
(particularly BRCA) can increase ones risk for
breast cancer.

15Questions
- What is the test Jenny and Jeremy are getting?
- What are the symptoms of Breast Cancer?
- Can males get Breast Cancer?
16What are the symptoms of Female Breast Cancer?
- There are no obvious symptoms and sometimes some
cancers dont have symptoms at all. But some
include Lumps, Swelling, Rashes, Cysts, Skin
Changes, or Nipple Discharge. - NOTE The fact that Jenny woke up with a
headache does not mean she has cancer because
headaches are not symptoms. -
17What is the test Jenny is getting?(Diagnosis for
Women)
- There are many different kinds of tests
- Mammograms
- Palpation
- Ultrasonography
- Tests can take weeks to get results back
18Can males get Breast Cancer?
- Males can get Breast Cancer even though less than
1 of breast cancer occurs in men. - Males have breast tissue even though they usually
dont develop into full size breasts, like
womens. - Symptoms of Male Breast Cancer Nipple pain,
lumps felt in breasts, an inverted nipple, nipple
discharge, sores on nipple, enlarged lymph nodes
under arm. - After symptoms are found here are some tests on
can take to check for the cancer Mammograms,
Ultrasound, Nipple discharge examination, Biopsy,
Needle Biopsy, Stereotactic needle biopsy,
Incisional Biopsy, and Excisional Biopsy.

20Treatments for Breast Cancer
- Surgery- surgeries targets the cancer tumor and
are able to be performed for all stages. It can
involve removal of the breast or just target the
tumor. - Complementary Medicines- Medicines that help the
person with the treatments side effects. It also
relieves the symptoms and improves the quality of
life
21Treatments for Breast Cancer
- Radiation- the high energy beams target the
cancerous areas. The beams damage the cancerous
cells and stops them from duplicating - Chemotherapy- It goes through the blood stream
and is attracted to rapidly dividing cells and
interferes with them. The problem is that it also
targets normal cells because they are rapidly
dividing just not as fast.
