- Forest degradation is today one of the greatest
grobal problems - West Africa for instance has lost three-fourth of
ist vergin forests through forest clearing - The savana is spreading 2,5 Km yearly southwards
- 30 ha of forest are being destroyed daily . and
so forth

Tree Planting on School Compounds in Ghana as
an Instrument against Forest Degradation

8Aims of the Project
Schulwälder für Westafrika e.V
- Major Points of the work in Ghana
- Tree planting of school compounds as a
contribution against Rain Forest degradation - Change of the attitude of the children towards
trees or forests, that is, the children should
delope a sense of feeling towards the importance
of the forest. - Transmission of theoretical und practical
Knowledge on Tree Planting (Environmental
Education) - Aforestation of school compounds with shade trees
(Lessons under Trees like former times)

23Energy and Forest
Schulwälder für Westafrika e.V
Trees supply over 90 the total Energy, which
is consumed in the less developed countries
(especially in Africa). As a result,
deforestation hat a sustainable or permanent
impact on the Energy supply of Africa.
The Majority of Africans consume 30 40 Kg /year
conventional Energy. In comparison
Europeans consume 5000 6000 Kg (200 times )
On the average, an inhabitant of the so-called
developing countries needs between 50 to 700Kg
Fire wood/year. This sums up to 2,7 to 3,8
Millionen Tons daily world-wide The deficit
of fuelwood in Afrika is estimated to be higher
than 300 million m3 per year with growing
tendency. The consequences can be alleviated by
using more efficient, fuel saving mothods, solar
equipment (solar cookers ) and by
aforestation

Ludwig-Bölkow-Foundation (in Ottobrunn) - SOLUX lanterns are sold in standard boxes
containing sets of 100 and as sample-lantern in
quantities of one. - The price difference between an assembled and and
unassembled lantern easily justifies assembling
them in the developing world. (Per set 36
Assembled 76) At least 10.000,00 for

40Summary
Schulwälder für Westafrika e.V
Solar Energy
In order to reduce pressure on the use of trees
as fuel wood the use of solar energy should be
an important key to future development in Africa.

- Quotations
- Environmental Protection in the Industrialized
Countries (Nord) remains imperfect if it is not
linked with the Environmental Protection in
the Developing Countries (South) - Zivilisation began with the felling of the first
tree and Zivilisation will end with the felling
of the last tree
Let all of us work on it, so that the last tree
is not felled. - Unterstützen Sie die Arbeit des
