Membranes

• Description Epithelium and/or underlying
  connective tissue (basal lamina).
• Function Cover, line, protect (lubricate)
  surfaces/cavities.

Types of membranes

• Epithelial membrane
• Epithelial membrane (proper) mechanical
  protection
• Epithelium and underlying connective tissue
• Cutaneous membrane (skin)
• Surface is keratinized
• Mucous membranes protection, lubrication
• Epithelium with underlying loose connective
  tissue (lamina propia). (respiratory tract,
  digestive tract).
• Serous membranes lubrication
• Simple squamous epithelium and scant areolar
  connective tissue. Occur in twos (continuous)
  parietal layer and a visceral layer.
• Synovial membranes lubrication
• Composed of connective tissue. They secrete
  lubricating fluid.
