3
Site Radiography
  • Considerations
  • Initial enquiry
  • Notification
  • Risk Assessment
  • Local Rules and Contingency Plans
  • Transport of RAM
  • Carrying out the work

4
Initial Enquiry
  • The initial enquiry for work will come from the
    customer/client
  • Component details
  • Size / dimensions
  • Can it be inspected/tested by another method
  • X-ray or Gamma
  • Location of the work
  • Applicable Code or Standard
  • Is it moveable to an exposure compound - (No)

5
Notification
  • Provide 7 day Notification to the HSE regarding
    site / workshop radiography.
  • Client details
  • Site details
  • Specific location
  • Contact name and number
  • Date and time of commencement
  • Radiographers on site
  • RPS details

6
Prior Risk Assessment
  • The 7 day notification allows the Radiographic
company time to do a site visit and carry out a
    Prior Risk Assessment
  • General Health and Safety assessment
  • Specific assessment for radiography
  • Lay out of site
  • Access routes to radiograhic work area
  • Single level or multi-level working
  • Site specific HSE local rules

7
Local Rules and Contingency Plans
  • As a result of the Risk assessment, amendments
may have to be made to local rules and to the
contingency plans. Factors that may influence
    this may include-
  • Customers specific local rules
  • Location of the work
  • Environmental issues
  • Timings for the work

8
Radiographic Crew
  • As a minimum the Radiographic Crew will consist
of 2 people (Radiographer assistant). The
specific qualifications for the crews makeup will
be dictated by the Code or Standard the customer
    is manufacturing to.
  • Usually a level II Radiographer / RPS
  • PCN
  • CSWIP
  • ASNT

9
Radiographer /RPS
  • The Radiographer/RPS will ensure the following-
  • Monitors are working and calibrated
  • TLDs are worn and current
  • Correct type of radiation is selected
  • Adequate barriers and signs are taken
  • Local rules are complied with
  • Acceptable radiographic images are produced for
    the client

10
Transporting the Source to site and back
Transporting the source on public roads is
enforced by the Department for Transport, and
must conform with The Radioactive Materials (Road
Transport) Regulations 2002.
11
Arriving at Site
  • Liase with site personnel check work scope
    against notification document
  • Site safety induction
  • Check a Permit to work is going to be available
  • Visit work location and carry out a Take 2
  • (mini risk assessment to ensure no major changes
    since last visit)
  • Obtain and sign work permit
  • Assemble equipment

12
Establishing a Controlled Area
  • The barriers to be erected at the 7.5 ?Sv/hr
    level
  • Physical barrier with warning signs and pennants
  • Barrier dimensions dependant on size of source or
    X-ray energy level
  • Barrier size must be manageable by site
Radiography crew, collimation will reduce the
    size
  • Typical barrier distance for an unshielded 370
GBq (10 ci) Iridium 192 is 80 metres

13
Controlled Area
Controlled Area for multi-level working
14
Managing the Controlled Area
  • Is the Controlled area manageable, factors that
    will influence
  • Size of controlled Area
  • Are all access routes barricaded and signed
  • Adequate lighting
  • Monitoring
  • Barrier Dose levels
  • Visually for unauthorised entry
  • The overall Environment

15
Completion of the Work
  • Ensure source is fully retracted back into
    container and monitor
  • Disconnect all equipment
  • If equipment fails to disconnect it may indicate
    a source disconnection
  • Tag any defective equipment
  • Remove barriers and reinstate work area
  • Transport RAM back to base
  • Log source into store

16
Common Problems
  • After initial enquiry and notification to the HSE
the client changes the goal posts
  • Time of work
  • Location
  • Components
  • Cancellation
  • Site interference
  • Waiver of 7 day notification
