Sensitivity Control
The sensitivity control knob determines the
softest level of sound that the cochlear implant
microphone will pick up.

LED (Light Emitting Diode) Indicator
  • The LED is used to indicate the following
  • Battery charge status
  • Lock status
  • Microphone system status.

11
LED IndicatorBattery Charge Status
  • When the sound processor is first turned
  • on, the LED will flash red.
  • 3 to 4 quick blinks- battery is fully charged.
  • 2 quick blinks- battery is sufficiently charged
    to power the system.
  • 1 quick blink- battery is nearly depleted and
    should be replaced.

12
LED IndicatorLock Status
  • Lock Status- indicates the internal device and
    the sound processor are communicating
    successfully.
  • After the battery charge sequence the LED will
continue to flash red once per second until the
headpiece is over the internal implant and
communication with the internal device is
    established.

13
LED IndicatorMicrophone System Status
  • Microphone System Status- indicates the
microphone is picking up sound and transmitting
    to the internal device.
  • After the battery and lock status sequences the
LED should flash green to loud speech.

14
LED Indicator

15
Audible Alarm
  • This is an optional feature that alerts you to
when the sound processor is not transmitting
    sound to the internal device.
  • Not all students will have this feature
    activated.

16
Battery Pack
The AA Battery pack is an alternative battery
pack that is powered by 3 AA batteries.
17
Steps for Putting on the sound processor and
Completing a Device Check
  • 1. Verify that the Processor is off.
  • 2. Check that the battery is in place.
  • 3. Turn the volume control all the way down.
  • 4. Set sensitivity to user setting (usually at
    about 1200).
  • 5. Place the headpiece over the implant.
  • 6. Turn the processor to the appropriate
    program.
  • 7. Use the LED to verify battery charge and lock
    status.
  • 8. Gradually increase the volume control to the
    users setting.
  • 9. Check the microphone status by snapping your
fingers or saying ba-ba-ba in a loud voice near
the microphone. The LED should illuminate or
    flash green while doing this.
  • 10. Perform a behavioral listening check. For
example, ask the child to detect or discriminate
    the Ling sounds.

Keys to Successful Troubleshooting
  • Understand the system
  • Ask good questions
  • Have the right tools
  • Preventative Maintenance
  • Common Sense Experience

20
Troubleshooting the PSP
  • If you suspect that your student is not hearing
    well, do the following
  • Visually inspect the students equipment
  • 2. Make sure the students processor is set on
the correct program with the appropriate volume
    and sensitivity settings
  • 3. Check the battery status using the LED

21
Troubleshooting the PSP
  • What can you do to troubleshoot the sound
    processor?
  • Use the LED sequence to determine what the
    problem may be
  • Change the battery
  • Change the cable
  • Listen to the headpiece microphone with the
microphone tester earphone -change the headpiece
    if warranted
  • Plug in the auxiliary microphone to provide a
different source for microphone pick up

25
Product Overview Harmony BTE
  • Status LED
  • Orange (battery status)
  • When battery inserted orange flashing (0,1) (2,3)
    (4) times indicates relative amount of battery
    charge remaining
  • During use steady orange indicates low battery
  • During use blinking orange (2x pause 2x pause)
    change battery
  • Green (microphone status)
  • Flickers green in response to loud sounds, good
  • Steady green indicates empty program slot
    suitable for performing microphone test
  • Red (lock status)
  • Blinks in 1 sec interval indicates No Lock
  • Rapid blinks indicates wrong implant linked
  • Steady red means processor error condition -
remove and reinsert battery to reset
