What is Fibromyalgia Syndrome?

• It is a widespread musculoskeletal pain and
  fatigue disorder for which the cause is still
  unknown. Fibromyalgia means pain in the muscles,
  ligaments, and tendons, the soft fibrous tissue
  in the body.

Pain

• Has no boundaries
• deep muscular aching, throbbing,shooting, and
  stabbing
• intense burning may also be present
• worse in the morning
• hurts more in muscles used most often

Fatigue

• This symptom can be mild in some patients yet
  incapacitating in others
• Feels like a bad flu
• feels like someone has unplugged you from power
  supply
• patients say their arms and legs feel like they
  are tied to concrete blocks
• they have difficulty concentrating

Sleep disorder

• EEG-anomaly
• This condition was uncovered in a sleep lab with
  a machine which recorded the brain waves of
  patients while asleep
• Deep sleep interrupted(stage 4)
• is needed for tissue repair, antibody repair
• interrupted by brain activity

Aggravating factors

• Changes in weather
• stress
• depression

Possible causes

• Remains elusive
• triggering events, may onset it
• automobile accident
• another disorder(rheumatoid arthritis)
• they dont cause FMS, but they may awaken an
  underlying abnormality that is already present

Treatment

• Physical therapy
• occupational therapy
• acupuncture
• chiropractic
• therapeutic massage
• muscle relaxants and other drugs may be
  prescribed

Prognosis

• Studies show that it is chronic
• symptoms may vary
• ability to work, differs from person to person
• can be equally as disabling as rheumatoid
  arthritis
