5Ha-Mim. The revelation of the Book is from Allah,
the Exalted in Power, full of Wisdom. Verily in
the heavens and the earth, are Signs for those
who believe. And in the creation of yourselves
and the fact that animals are scattered (through
the earth), are Signs for those of doubtless
faith. And in the alternation of Night and Day,
and the fact that Allah sends down Sustenance
from the sky (rain), and revives therewith the
earth after its death, and in the change of the
winds, are Signs for those that are wise. Such
are Signs of Allah, which We recite to thee in
truth then in what presentation will they
believe after (rejecting) Allah and His Signs?

7We have created Man from a succession of clay
Then We placed him as (a drop of) sperm in a
place of rest, secure and protected Then We made
the sperm into a clot of congealed blood then of
that clot We made a (foetus) lump then We made
out of that lump bones and clothed the bones with
flesh then We developed out of it another
creation. So blessed is Allah, the Best of
creators!

11O mankind! if you are in doubt about the
resurrection, then verily, We created you from
dust, then from a nutfah (sperm), then out of a
leech-like clot, then out of a morsel of flesh,
some formed and some unformed, in order that We
clarify (Our Power) to you and We cause to
remain in the wombs what We will for an appointed
term, then We bring you out as infants, then to
reach your age of full strength and among you
there are those who die (young), and those who
are sent back to the feeblest old age, so that
they know nothing after having known (much). And
(further), you see the earth barren and lifeless,
but when We pour down rain on it, it is stirred
(to life), it swells, and it puts forth every
kind of beautiful growth in pairs.

14Scientific Aspects of Reproduction
Creation of Man According to Aristotle (384 322
B.C) Complete form in Sperm or Egg that
subsequently grows in size in the womb in a
manner similar to a tree growing as a result of
nourishments.
15The contributions of muslim scholars in medicine
are embodied foremost by Ibn Sinaa (Avicenna 980
- 1037). To many scholars, he is the father of
modern medicine. He is the author of the earliest
text book in medicine, Al Qanoon (The Law). In
it he did not provide details on embryology but
did elaborate on medical aspects of child rearing
from birth. On the other hand, Abu Alqasim
Azahrawi (940? 1013) is considered the chief of
surgeons. He described details of surgical
procedures including the caesarean operation.
The science of embryology can be traced back to
the 18th century when Spallanzani, an Italian
scientist, stated in 1775 that both a sperm and
an egg contribute to the development a foetus.
This was later proved by Van Beneden. (Ref

16Stages of Development Stage 1 Nutfah the
fertilized egg Stage 2 Alaqa which in Arabic is
used to refer to a blood-sucking worm (Leech),
something that clings and a blood clot. Stage
3 Mudgha which means a chewed substance Stage
4 Creation of the bones Stage 5 Creation of the
flesh Stage 6 A differentiated creature Stage 7
Birth
17Stage 1 Nutfah the fertilized egg
Amongst millions of sperms only few hundred reach
the egg. Amongst these hundreds, only one
fertilizes it.
Within few hours of fertilization, cell division
begins.
18The egg contains only X chromosomes while a sperm
contains either X or Y chromosomes. If an X
sperm fertilizes the egg, a female is conceived.
If a Y sperm fertilizes the egg, a male is
conceived. This fact has only been discovered in
the 20th century subsequent to the introduction
of the electron microscope in the 1930s. Yet the
Quraan states more than 1400 years ago the
following
- ????????? ???????? ????????????? ??? ???????

And He is the One who create the pair of male and
female, From a seed when lodged (in its place)
19Stage 2 Alaqa like a blood-sucking worm (Leech)
20Stage 2 Alaqa as something that clings
The foetus clinging to the uterus
21Stage 2 Alaqa as a blood clot
The abundance of blood vessels in the foetus
makes it look red.
22Stage 3 Mudgha meaning a chewed substance
A photograph taken with an electronic microscope
on day 26 of foetus development.
23Stage 4 Creation of the bones
Until recently, bones and muscles were assume to
develop at the same time. Recent research
revealed that bones cells form first followed by
muscle tissues wrapping around the bones.
Day 42
Day 44
24Stage 5 Creation of the flesh
Day 48
Day 56
Until this point, i.e. in the first two months,
the developing human being is referred to as an
embryo. From two months to birth, it is referred
to as a foetus. The size of a fertilized egg on
conception is smaller than a grain of sand, yet
it contains complete genetic information in tiny
structures known as chromosomes (containing
DNAs). There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in a
fertilized egg, 23 from a male sperm and 23 from
a female egg. By the end of the second month,
the embryo measures about 2.5 cm in length and
weighs about 14 grams. After one week of the
first cell division, the cells specialize to two
main groups. One group develops the various
organs and the other develops into the placenta
that protects and nourishes the foetus.
25Stage 6 A differentiated creature
12 weeks
Clearly, the features of human being and the
proportions of head, torso, arms, feet, fingers
and toes are evident.

Three veils of darkness appears to refer to the
fact that the new born develops inside the
placenta which is inside the uterus which is
inside the abdomen.
26Stage 7 Birth
After normal pregnancy of 38 week (nine lunar
months) the growth of a foetus is complete and
is ready for birth. Allah said
