SON OF GOD / FIRST-BORN / ONLY BEGOTTEN
  • Introduction
  • In this lesson we look at three terms applied
to Jesus of Nazareth who died to save man
    eternally. But first
  • 1. When asked by the high priest if he was the
Christ, the Son of the Blessed, he answered I
    am, Mark 1461.
  • 2. The Jews understood that Jesus claimed to
be just that! Jn. 1030-33, I and the Father are
one. 31 The Jews took up stones again to stone
him. 32 Jesus answered them, Many good works
have I showed you from the Father for which of
those works do ye stone me? 33 The Jews
    answered

3
him, For a good work we stone thee not, but for
blasphemy and because that thou, being a man,
makest thyself God.
  • 3. When Peter attributed deity to him, he said
nothing to the contrary, Jn. 668, Simon Peter
answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou
hast the words of eternal life.
  • 4. But Modernists claim that he was a great
moralist, philosopher, and teacher, but not a
divine being. They try to uphold Jesus ethical
teachings, while denying his divinity (by
claiming that Jesus did not affirm his deity, but
that his followers affirmed it after he had
    died)!
  • But N.T. teaching denies this explanation of
    man.

4
How can a liar, an imposter, be such a great
teacher of morals? If Jesus was not what he
claimed to be, he was not worthy of any credence!
  • The undeniable testimony of so many
eye-witness-es, both of men and women, causes us
to make ours the words of Martha, Jn. 1127, Yea,
Lord I have be-lieved that thou art the Christ,
the Son of God, even he that cometh into the
    world.
  • 5. To deny the deity of Jesus is to condemn
oneself to eternal damnation he will die in his
sins! Jn. 824, I said therefore unto you, that
ye shall die in your sins for except ye believe
that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

5
Now to the significant phrases or terms applied
to Jesus of Nazareth
  • I. SON OF GOD
  • Son of , in the figurative sense, denotes
    sameness of nature.
  • It does not imply that one has a mother and a
father, that the father has a wife!
  • This is the big mistake of the Muslims
argu-ment. He ignores the idiomatic meaning of
the Jews speech, and gives to this expression a
literal application, as if reference were made to
a literal sonship from father and mother.
  • Of course God doesnt have a wife! Who claims
that He does? Certainly not the Bible!

6
Gen. 420,21, And Adah bare Jabal he was the
father of such as dwell in tents and have
cattle. 21 And his brother's name was Jubal he
was the father of all such as handle the harp and
pipe.
  • Those who dwelt in tents were sons of Jabal,
in the sense of identifying with him in the
nature of their living habits. -- Those who
played instruments of music identified with Judal
in the nature of their musical skills.
  • They were not literally descendents of those
    two men!
  • Gen. 174, As for me, behold, my covenant is
with thee, and thou shalt be the father of a
    multitude of nations.

7
The many nations, or tribes, did not have the
same father and mother, but were sons of Abraham
in that they identified with Abrahams line of
descent.
  • Mar. 317, James the son of Zebedee, and John
the brother of James and them he surnamed
Boanerges, which is, Sons of thunder.
  • Does thunder have a wife, that together they
might have sons? Does anyone have a problem
under-standing this idiomatic expression of the
Jews language? Why, then, the problem
understanding the figurative expression, Son of
    God?
  • Lk. 106, And if a son of peace be there, your
peace shall rest upon him but if not, it shall
    turn to you again.

8
A son of peace is one who is of the nature of
peace, one who is characterized by peace.
  • Obviously peace does not have a wife, that
    togeth-er they might have children!
  • Lk. 2034-36, And Jesus said unto them, The
sons of this world marry, and are given in
marriage 35 but they that are accounted worthy
to attain to that world, and the resurrection
from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in
marriage 36 for neither can they die any more
for they are equal unto the angels and are sons
of God, being sons of the resurrection.
  • Reference is made to those identified with an
ungodly world, and to others identified with God,
    and with the resurrection.

9
Jn. 1712, While I was with them, I kept them in
thy name which thou hast given me and I guarded
them, and not one of them perished, but the son
of perdition that the scripture might be
fulfilled.
  • Judas Iscariot was one identified with
perdition (a state of being lost).
  • Who was the wife of perdition, that Judas
should be called the son of perdition?
  • Acts 436, And Joseph, who by the apostles was
surnamed Barnabas (which is, being interpreted,
    Son of exhortation)
  • Who was Barnabas mother? Was his father named
    Exhortation?
  • Any problem here? Of course not!

10
So Jesus, in calling himself the Son of God,
made himself equal with God, Jn. 518, For this
cause therefore the Jews sought the more to kill
him, because he not only brake the sabbath, but
also called God his own Father, making himself
equal with God.
  • The expression, Son of God, sets forth position,
not derivation! Rom. 14, who was declared to
be the Son of God with power, according to the
spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the
    dead.
  • Son of God title, equal to Messiah, Matt.
2663,64, And the high priest said unto him, I
adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us
whether thou art the Christ, the Son of God. 64
Jesus said unto him, Thou hast said.

11
Jesus did not refer to himself as a son of
God, but as the son of God.
  • Jesus taught his disciples, in praying, to say
our father, but he always referred to God as
my father. He identified with deity is of the
    same na-ture.
  • The role of Sonship (subjection) had a
beginning. (But as to deity and eternity Jesus
Christ is the Word, Jn. 11).

12
II. FIRST-BORN
  • proto first tikto bring forth
  • (a) in time --
  • Esau, Gen. 2719, And Jacob said unto his
father, I am Esau thy first-born.
  • In Egypt, Exod. 1115, and all the first-born
in the land of Egypt shall die, from the
first-born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his
throne, even unto the first-born of the
maid-servant that is behind the mill and all the
    first-born of cattle.
  • Jesus, Lk. 27, And she brought forth her
first-born son and she wrapped him in swaddling
clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there
was no room for them in the inn.

13
(b) in position
  • disease, Job 1813, The members of his body
shall be devoured, Yea, the first-born of death
shall devour his members. ( the most powerful)
  • poor, Isa. 1430, And the first-born of the
poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in
safety and I will kill thy root with famine, and
thy remnant shall be slain. ( the most needy
    of all)
  • Israel, Exod. 422,23, And thou shalt say unto
Pharaoh, Thus saith Jehovah, Israel is my son, my
first-born 23 and I have said unto thee, Let
my son go, that he may serve me and thou hast
refused to let him go behold, I will slay thy
    son, thy first-born.
  • ( Israel, a special one of preeminence)

14
Ephraim, Jer. 319, They shall come with
weeping and with supplications will I lead them
I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in
a straight way wherein they shall not stumble
for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my
first-born. ( Israel, Ephraim, Gods
special people)
  • King David, Ps. 8927, I also will make him
my first-born, The highest of the kings of the
    earth.
  • (David was not the oldest child in his family,
but God exalted him in position above all the
    kings of the earth).
  • Christians, Heb. 1223, to the general
assembly and church of the firstborn who are
enrolled in heaven, and to God the Judge of all,
and to the spirits of just men made perfect

15
( the church is made up of first-born ones
that is, of preeminent ones. What a privilege to
be a Christian!)
  • Christ, Rom. 829, that he might be the
    firstborn among many brethren.
  • Col. 115-18, who is the image of the
in-visible God, the firstborn of all creation
16 for in him were all things created, in the
heavens and upon the earth, things visible and
things invisible, whether thrones or dominions or
principalities or powers all things have been
created through him, and unto him 17 and he is
before all things, and in him all things consist.
18 And he is the head of the body, the church
who is the beginning, the firstborn from the
dead that in all things he might have the
    pre-eminence.

16
Rev. 15, Jesus Christ, who is the faithful
witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler
of the kings of the earth.
  • First-born (in the figurative sense) does not
say, first created (per the Jeh. Witnesses),
nor sug-gests a mother and father, but denotes
preeminence (because the first born got the
    primogeniture)!
  • III. ONLY BEGOTTEN
  • Hebrew, yalad Greek, gennao
  • Compare Psalms 2 (Messianic) plus Heb. 15, For
unto which of the angels said he at any time,
Thou art my Son, This day have I begotten thee?
  • (a) bring forth, as a mother, Gen. 41, And the
man knew Eve his wife and she conceived, and
    bare Cain.

17
Lk. 113, But the angel said unto him, Fear
not, Zacharias because thy supplication is
heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a
son.
  • (b) beget, as a father, Gen. 418, Irad begat
Mehujael and Mehujael begat Methushael and
    Methushael begat Lamech.
  • Matt. 12, Abraham begat Isaac and Isaac
begat Jacob and Jacob begat Judah and his
    brethren.
  • Figuratively, 1 Cor. 415, For though ye have
ten thousand tutors in Christ, yet have ye not
many fathers for in Christ Jesus I begat you
    through the gospel.

18
(c) Christ in his human role was begotten by
the Holy Spirit, Matt. 120, Heb. 105, Joseph,
thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee
Mary thy wife for that which is conceived in her
is of the Holy Spirit ... Wherefore when he
cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and
offering thou wouldest not, But a body didst thou
prepare for me. ( associated w/ deity)
  • (d) In reference to Christ, only begotten is
a statement of his singular position, not his
    origin!
  • Greek Monogenes, Jn. 114,18, And the Word
be-came flesh, and dwelt among us (and we beheld
his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the
Father), full of grace and truth No man hath
seen God at any time the only begotten Son, who
    is in the .

19
bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.
  • Jn. 316,18, For God so loved the world, that
he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
be-lieveth on him should not perish, but have
eternal life 18 He that believeth on him is
not judged he that believeth not hath been
judged already, be-cause he hath not believed on
the name of the only begotten Son of God.
  • Isaac is called Abrahams only begotten son
(Heb. 1117), yet Abraham had more sons (Gal.
422, Ishmael). Therefore, Isaac is designated,
by the term only begotten, as the son of
    promise and purpose!

20
CONCLUSION
  • 1. Psalms 2, Why do the nations rage, And the
peoples meditate a vain thing? 2 The kings of
the earth set themselves, And the rulers take
counsel together, Against Jehovah, and against
his anointed, saying, 3 Let us break their
bonds asunder, And cast away their cords from us.
4 He that sitteth in the heavens will laugh
The Lord will have them in derision. 5 Then
will he speak unto them in his wrath, And vex
them in his sore displeasure 6 Yet I have set
my king Upon my holy hill of Zion. 7 I will
tell of the decree Jehovah said unto me, Thou
art my son This day have I begotten thee.

21
8 Ask of me, and I will give thee the nations
for thine inheritance, And the uttermost parts of
the earth for thy possession. 9 Thou shalt
break them with a rod of iron Thou shalt dash
them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
  • Verse 7 sets forth the time of Christs
    Kingship, universal dominion, coronation and
    Priesthood.
  • 2. Christs role of Sonship began as he arose
from the dead, ascended on high and sent forth
the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost (and not
    at his miracu-lous birth!).
  • 3. The phrase, first-born, has no reference to
his miraculous birth, but to his position of
    preeminence.

22
4. The term only begotten has no reference to
physical birth of a father and mother, but to the
uniqueness of his role as the Son of God (that
is, God with us, deity!).
  • 5. All this being true, the last four verses of
    Ps. 2 have specific meaning!
  • 10 Now therefore be wise, O ye kings Be
instructed, ye judges of the earth. 11 Serve
Jehovah with fear, And rejoice with trembling.
12 Kiss the son, lest he be angry, and ye perish
in the way, For his wrath will soon be kindled.
Blessed are all they that take refuge in him.
  • 6. Are YOU serving Jehovah with fear?
