Title: Business Opportunity

1
Handwritten Signature Verification (HSV)
  • The system considers over fifty aspects of the
signature shape (area, turning points etc.) and
    dynamics (velocity, acceleration, duration etc.).
  • System requirements are small at just 60
kilobytes of disk space and 860 kilobytes of
memory (less than one kilobyte of disk space is
    required for each user).
  • Testing was done using an extensive database of
thousands of forgeries and genuine signatures
with an overall error rate (the sum of false
acceptance and false rejection rates) of well
under 3 resulting, compared to 5-7 for other
    systems in the biometric field.
  • Business Opportunity
  • Biometrics offer a range of superior technologies
utilising human attributes for the purpose of
    security authentication. Whereas many biometric
solutions raise issues of novelty and compulsion
for consumers, signatures are an established
    method of verifying identity.
  •
  • Handwritten Signature Verification HSV produces
a signature profile by synthesising from several
examples of an individuals signature a number of
features that are unique to it, along with
distinctive attributes such as speed and
pressure. Verification and forgery detection on
the basis of the profile is a computerised
procedure, removing human error from the process.
  •
  • The HSV system offers a robust security solution
that can be implemented in a wide range of
    applications.
  • Market
  • Demand is growing with total biometric revenues
estimated to grow from US730m in 2002 to US1.9b
    by 2005.
  • In 2001 signature scan technology represented
2.7 market share. At the current share of total
revenues, signature scanning will represent a
    US51m market by 2005.
  • By 2004 total emerging sector revenue (PC/Network
    Access, e-commerce and telephony, physical
access and surveillance) is expected to surpass
mature sector revenue (Criminal and citizen
    identification).
  • Emerging sectors are estimated to grow by up to
75 in 2003, and continuing to expand by 43 in
    2005.
  • Technology
  • The system combines the capabilities of two
    powerful artificial intelligence mechanisms in
neural networks and hidden Markov models to
produce a robust and accurate signature
verification system. The system is an on-line (or
dynamic) signature verification system and would
be suitable for use in standalone security
hardware (e.g. to sign into a building),
    e-commerce applications and handheld computer
    security.
