Possession in English

• In English, possession is expressed by using an
  apostrophe and the letter s, or the preposition
  of, as seen in the examples below
• Johns mother is a doctor.
• The roar of the lion sent shivers down his
  spine.

• In German, possession is also shown by using the
  letter s, but without an apostrophe, as seen in
  the examples

• The most common way of showing possession in
  German, however, is the use of the Genitive Case.
  
• Articles with Genitive endings are used to show
  possession.

Additional Rules to Remember

• Masculine and neuter nouns require an s to be
  added to the noun as well in the genitive case.
• If the noun has only one syllable, the ending is
  es.
• If the noun has more than one syllable, the
  ending is s.
• Adjectives that describe a noun in the genitive
  also take an ending, but its easy to remember,
  its always en.
