Project Portfolio Assessment 2003-2004

• General Portfolio
  Instructions
• Instructional Notes The artwork for the
  Portfolio Project may be created as part of the
  classroom curriculum or as a supervised
  independent study. Artwork created in an earlier
  grade may be included in the portfolio, providing
  it has not been submitted previously. The artwork
  may be created in any medium(s) or combinations
  of mediums.
• Portfolio Preparation - Format Sturdy folder
  (handmade or purchased), labeled with name,
  school, school address, and school phone number.
• Presentation of artwork All artwork must be
  matted or mounted for presentation.
• Size of Artwork Suggested 2D maximum size 24x
  36 3D or over 24 x 36 include slides or
  photographs (for 3D pieces include 3 views - top
  and 2 sides) 3D or oversized pieces may be
  brought to the adjudication site at the artists
  discretion, and the artist assumes responsibility
  for their safe handling.
• Inventory List List of art works should be
  attached to the inside of the portfolio.
• Critical Analysis/Reflection and Artist
  Statement Should be placed in a manila envelope
  affixed to the inside of the portfolio.
• Labels All artworks must include an official
  label affixed tot he back with student signature.

NOTE all work and the overall presentation will
be adjudicated based on RATING

Portfolio Presentation Students must plan to be
in attendance at the adjudication site to present
their portfolios. Note Modifications for
students with special needs should be indicated
by the students teacher and included in the
Artists Statement envelope.

Artist Statement
Artists Inventory List - required for each level
The New York State Art Teachers Association
Portfolio Project is based on our State Learning
Standards for the Arts. This assessment
instrument is derived from the performance
indicators within each of the four standards, and
is a measure of what students should know and be
able to do. The Portfolio Project showcases
student achievement without mandating the tools
or techniques students sue to create their
artwork.

• Work reveals development of students ideas and
  images through the exploration of themes,
  symbols, and events.
• Work reveals the understanding of the
  characteristics of specific mediums and the
  appropriate use of the medium selected.

  cultural, historical, or artistic reference.

• CULTURAL a piece of artwork that reflects a
  specific non-Western culture, I.e. Native

• ARTISTIC INFLUENCE a piece of artwork based on
  the content and style of a specific artist.

Tips from the Field Encourage student to include
work which reflects the students awareness of
and sensitivity toward cultural diversity -
whether the work expresses a theme from a culture
other than his/her own is about artistic
influence, content, and style or explores
history in through an art process .

• Answer should include art vocabulary used
  correctly.
• Answer contains information about materials,
  processes, and techniques.

• Use the Intermediate Critical Analysis/Reflection
  form to write about the resource based artwork
  created for Selection 1.
• Place completed form in the envelope with the
  artist statement.

• Tips from the Field
• Through regular class discussions and making
  analysis (written and/or verbal) a routine part
  of your teaching and your students learning in
  art, your students will already have developed a
  good habit of thinking critically.
• Encourage their writing more than one draft of
  this response item. It should be natural - in
  their own words.

Selection 3 Process Piece - Development

• Work will include final artwork and rough drafts,
  including any other resources used to develop the
  ideas and images I.e. photo references,
  additional sketches or studies, or journal
  entries.
• The piece selected should reflect the technical
  skill and understanding of the medium used. The
  choice of the medium should be appropriate to the
  content of the piece.

• Work demonstrates problem solving skills and
  development in moving from resources to drafts to
  final artwork.
• Work demonstrates a technical expertise in using
  the chosen medium.

Tips from the field Encourage students to
recognize the importance of getting in the habit
of making thumbnail and idea sketches and
documenting their use of resources as part of the
creative problem solving process. They are
creating a process trail which in this item is
crucial to assessing the total performance.

• Student submits two additional pieces of their
  own choosing.
• These works can be two or three-dimensional in
  any medium or combination of mediums. Examples
  may include but are not limited to electronic
  media, moving images, drawings, painting,
  sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, textiles, or
  fiber or combined use of mediums such as collage
  and assemblage.
• Work selected demonstrates a knowledge of the
  Elements and Principles of Art.

• Adjudication Guidelines
• Work shows evidence of relationship between
  medium(s) chosen and theme of work.
• Work demonstrates technical mastery of medium(s)

Tips from the field These are often the last two
pieces to go into the portfolio. Not because they
are any less important, but because students
generally find pieces that match certain
selection categories first to fulfill the
required part.
