Domestic Abuse Stats
  • 1 in 3 US women will experience physical violence
from a husband or boyfriend in their life
  • Domestic violence is present in 60 of marriages
and is the least reported crime
  • Domestic abuse accounts for 1.4 million in
medical costs annually, and over 900 million in
    mental health treatment
  • 95 of battered women say their children were
    present at their beating

7
Tying the Violence Together
  • In a study by Baldry, published in Criminal
    Behavior and Mental Health (2005),
preadolescents, with a mean age of 11.73, were
found to exhibit violence towards animals most
    highly after having witnessed intra-parental
abuse. The percentages were only slightly lower
for physical abuse towards the children, but the
results suggest that there is a connection
between witnessing violence and practicing animal
    abuse.

8
  • A national survey of battered women in shelters
yielded shocking data 85 of women and 63 of
children disclosed animal abuse in the home they
    had fled.
  • Further data from the above study includes 24 of
abusers preformed acts of animal abuse in front
    of the woman.

9
  • Studies in New Jersey found that 60 of homes
studied with child abuse also had pets that were
abused, with higher percentages in families were
    physical abuse was prevalent.
  • Research by Frederich suggest that those sexually
abused have a substantially higher rate of animal
    abuse.
  • FBI research shows a clear linkage between serial
killers early acts of mutilation and violence
towards animals and their later escalation to
    human victims.

10
Conclusions/Wrap Up
  • There is an ever growing amount of evidence that
animal abuse and domestic violence are closely
    tied.
  • The futures greatest needs are stricter
legislation against animal abuse and viewing
animal abuse as a precursor to antisocial and
    violent behavior.
