9Living/Non-Living
- Horizontal Planning Guide Updates
- 1. Under teacher background on the second grade
document The words that have a
strikethrough have been eliminated from the
document. - Teacher Background
- By second grade, students will have prior
knowledge of the characteristics of living
organisms. However, often they equate movement
with life. For example, if they observe animals
for the first time and the animal is not moving,
the students tend to deduce that it is dead.
They also do not yet understand the cycle of
life (birth, growth, death), and therefore
classify nonliving as anything that has died. In
science, living is used to describe anything that
is or has ever been alive nonliving is used to
describe anything that is not now nor has ever
been alive. Over time, students will begin to
understand that all living things grow,
reproduce, excrete, respond to stimuli, and have
similar basic needs like nourishment. Â Â - 2. The table shown on page 2 has fossil and
feather listed under living when they should be
nonliving.Â
