Beliefs
  • Many thought Fairies, Goblins,and Spirits came
    out at night to play tricks on all the innocent
    people.
  • The Elizabethan People were very superstitious.
  • Disease and disaster were blamed on witches.
  • Astrology was deeply believed and was referred to
    often.

Funerals
  • A Funeral bell was rung to announce a death.
  • Mourners wore hooded cloaks which covered them
    completely.
  • The coffin was closed and carried to grave by
    pallbearers dressed all in black.
  • Body was buried inside church.
  • Noblemens funerals were extremely elaborate.

Marriage
  • It was foolish to marry someone for love.
  • If couples wanted to hurry to get married, they
    went to the Bishop to get a special license.
  • Marriage was an all day occasion with a full
    ceremony and celebration afterwards.
  • Brides wore a white dress with their hair up.

Religion
  • Almost everyone believed in God.
  • It was expected to go to heaven or hell after
    death.
  • Fine clothes, gambling, drinking, and going to
    see plays was seen as a sin by Protestants.
  • All Catholics were seen as traitors to their
    countries during war.

Children
  • Infant and child mortality was high
  • Little boys wore skirts like the girls until age
    6 or 7
  • After school, children did not advance to
    university.
  • Infants are wrapped in cloth quite tight for the
    first 6-12 months.
  • Illegitimate children could not legally own or
    inherit property or marry.
