• The study of UFOs is known as Ufology.

Hynek Classification System

• Developed by Astronomer Dr. J. Allen Hynek
• Consisted of Four Groups
• Close Encounters of the First Kind (CEI)
• Object gets close, but does not interact with
  environment
• Close Encounters of the Second Kind (CEII)
• Causes physical change in environment
• Close Encounters of the Third Kind (CEIII)
• Occupants seen, but no interaction
• Close Encounters of the Fourth Kind (CEIV)
• Interaction with Occupants

Eyewitness Evidence

• Eyewitnesses with little to gain continue to
  report seeing strange craft in the sky, for which
  science can offer no explanation

Kenneth Arnolds Sighting

• Location Cascade Mountains, Washington
• Date June 24, 1947
• Nine disk-like objects flying in formation
• Estimated at 1,200 mph
• Started Flying Saucer craze

Japan Airlines Flight 1628

• Pilot and Crew spotted UFO at 39,000 feet while
  on approach to Anchorage, Alaska
• Air Control confirmed the sighting
• Military Hercules sent to intercept but object
  disappeared

Belgium Triangle

• UFO sighted thousands of times in 1989-90 in
  Belgium
• Described as giant black triangle with lights on
  sides
• Leon Brenig, a professor of physics at local
  university, commented that it in no way behaved
  like an ordinary man-made aircraft

Physical Evidence

• Occurs during CEII, CEIII, CEIV
• Commonly is
• Scorch marks
• Increased radiation levels
• Impact marks
• Psychological impact on animals or humans
• Physical damage to animal or human witness

Aircraft Disappearance

• October 21, 1978
• Bass Straight, Australia
• Green, star-shaped object
• Collided with Frederick Valentich piloting his
  Cessna aircraft at 4,500 feet
• Aircraft and UFO disappeared
• Neither Cessna or Valentichs body was ever found

Cash/Landrum Incident

• Betty Cash, Vicki Landrum, and Colby Landrum
• December 28, 1980
• Near Dayton, Texas
• Encountered craft hovering above road
• After leaving car, grew frightened, and drove off
• Later developed radiation sickness and cancer

Classic Abduction Experience

• Involves
• Sense of fear and paralysis
• Feel a presence
• Moved onto the craft
• Medical examination
• Sometimes given message or tour of craft
• Wake up next morning in general location of where
  they came from

Project Blue Book

• Conducted by U.S. Air Force
• 1948-1969
• Hired prominent scientists as consultants,
  including Dr. J. Allen Hynek
• Discovered that most sightings were actually
  mundane objects, astronomical phenomena, or
  meteorological phenomena

• However, hundreds of the investigations remain
  unsolved to this day
• Stopped in 1969 due to lack of political interest
  and funding
• Dr. J. Allen Hynek then created Hynek Center for
  the Study of UFOs
• Foreign governments have conducted similar
  investigations and have also found hundreds of
  unsolved cases each

Conclusion

• Overwhelming amounts of evidence presented by
  eyewitness accounts, physical evidence, and
  government investigations
• Scientific community will not accept Ufology yet
  even with the evidence because they only accept
  things once they know the cause of phenomena, not
  just results

• The evidence determines that UFOs exist, now more
  data is needed to find out what they are.
