Title: Going Green
1Going Green
2Glossary and Equivalency Table
3- Carbon Dioxide
- The byproduct of burning hydrocarbon fuels,
Carbon Dioxide, also referred to is Carbon and
CO2, is the bad stuff that is eating away the
ozone, warming the earth, and polluting our
skies. Oil, coal, and natural gas are some
examples of hydrocarbon fuels. - Is measured in lbs/tons.
4- 13 lbs of carbon emissions are equivalent to 1
tree. - An average car emits 10,500 lbs of carbon per
year.
5- OVERVIEW
- Tonight we are going to learn how your household
can reduce its energy use. - We have divided it up into three areas
6- Things you can do that require zero financial
investment. - Things that require a small financial investment.
- Things that you can do that require a major
investment.
7- We will also discuss
- green-ing school lunches.
- And finally, leave some time for questions.
8BOTTLED WATER
9- Try to refrain from buying bottled water
- Instead, buy a reusable bottle and a filter that
attaches to your faucet. This saves money and
keeps plastic out of landfills.
10You Save
- 17.40/mo
- You Save the Earth
- 38.80 lbs of CO2 equal to monthly intake of 3
trees
11LAUNDRY
12- Eliminate Hot and Warm Water Laundry Cycles
- By switching to cold water cycles, you can reduce
your washing energy costs by 90.
13You Save
- 5 a month
- You Save the Earth
- 47.57 lbs of CO2
14TIRE PRESSURE
15- Inflating Your Tires Does Make a Difference
- For every 10 PSI that your tires are deflated
beyond their requirements, you lose 1.3 miles for
every gallon of gas you consume.
16You Save
- 8.09/mo
- You Save the Earth
- 44.2 lbs of CO2

21- Instead of Sleep Mode, Power Off
- "Power saver" and sleep modes are deceiving.
Desktops and monitors that are put to sleep use
more power than you realize.
22You Save
- 12.09/mo
- You Save the Earth
- 115 lbs of CO2
23TEMPERATURE ADJUSTMENTS
24- Adjust Your Thermostat in the Right Direction
- HVAC is one of the most energy intensive products
in the Nation. In the summer, adjust your
thermostat to a comfortable 76 and lose the tie.
In the winter, move the thermostat to 68 and put
some clothes on.
25You Save
- 36/mo
- You Save the Earth
- 1,228 lbs of CO2 in the winter and 352 lbs of CO2
in the summer
26FLIP THE SWITCH
27- Turn the Lights OFF
- Incandescent lights are very inefficient. Of the
60 total Watts that a bulb uses, 54 are lost on
heat that creates the light. In other words,
leaving the lights on is like turning the heat up.
28You Save
- A lot if you turn them off
- You Save the Earth
- Even more
29WATER TEMPERATURE
30- Use Less Hot Water
- Reducing the temperature on your hot water heater
from 140 degrees to 120 degrees not only makes a
negligible impact on how much hot water is
available, it saves a lot of energy.
31You Save
- 2.78/mo
- You Save the Earth
- Even more
32Being mindful of these 8 simple things saves a
minimum of 82.57 a month. Over the course of a
year, you'll save 826.55and over 10,450 lbs of
CO2. Thats more than 5 tons.
33Energy Saving Methods That Require a Small
Investment
34LIGHT BULBS

35- Buy Squiggly Light Bulbs
- Compact Fluorescents, or CFLs, to be exact. They
are much more efficient because they do not light
by heat. Just remember, there is Mercury in CFLs
so they have to be disposed of properly.
36You Save
- .83 per month for each bulb you use in place of
incandescent bulbs. If you were to replace 24 of
your existing lights, that would be equivalent to
19.92 a month. - You Save the Earth
- Assuming 24 lights, 183.12 lbs of CO2
37TEMPERATURE CONTROL
38- Buy A Thermostat You Can Control
- For a one time cost of 35 at the neighborhood
Home Depot, you can purchase a programmable
thermostat that allows you to use your HVAC when
you need to.
39You Save
- An extra 50/mo
- You Save the Earth
- 1,828 lbs of CO2 in the winter, 440 lbs in the
summer
40HOT WATER HEATER

water_heater_comparison.gif
41- Bundle Up Your Hot Water Heater
- Insulate your water tank and the visible pipes.
Doing so decreases energy lost in transmission.
Doing so will also raise your hot water
temperature 2 to 4 degrees.
42You Save
- 2.81/mo
- You Save the Earth
- Even more
43Making these 3 investments in addition to the
other 8 behavior changes increases your monthly
savings by 72.73. To a total of 155.30, or
1,863.60 annually. Not to mention an additional
2,500 lbs of CO2 will be saved. All for less then
a one time investment of around 85.
44Energy Saving Methods That Require a Large
Investment
45HYBRID VEHICLES
/06/prius.jpg
46- Buy a Prius
- But only if you're going to keep it a while. The
Toyota Prius has the best payback of any hybrid
vehicle. Assuming consistent annual driving of
12,000 miles per year and a fuel cost of 3.53,
it will take you 4.9 years to pay back the
premium. An Altima Hybrid will take 5.4 and the
Civic Hybrid will take 8.7 years.
47The Good News
- You eliminate a ton of carbon.
- Over two tons to be exact.
48INSULATION
49- Insulate, Insulate, Insulate
- According to Dept of Energy, sealing air leaks
in your house with caulk and weatherstrips and
insulating your attic properly (R-38 in MD) and
basement (R-11) can save 20 on your heating and
cooling costs, or 1 entire month of winter
heating costs and 1 month of summer cooling
costs. Ace Hardware has 64 square feet of R-38
insulation for 70. The savings would pay for 256
sq. ft of this insulation per year, and 4 packs
of DAP 10.1oz caulk.
50- Buy an LCD TV
- When you spring for a new flat screen for the big
game, go LCD instead of Plasma. They use
considerable less power. In some cases, 50 less.
This can save you as much as 3.32 a month and 32
lbs of CO2, not to mention they are cheaper and
some would argue, have a better picture.
51SOLAR PANELS
52- Put in a Solar Panel
- While expensive, the cost of solar panels is
coming down. An average solar panel can cost
9,000 not including installation. However the
state of MD and the US Government provides some
relief 4,500 in the form of tax credits and
rebates. While it could take upwards of 20 years
to pay off this investment, on average you would
save 1,157 lbs of CO2 per month.
53- Go Geothermal
- Used for heating and cooling, geothermal pumps
transfer the earth's core temperature to provide
a more consistent base to heat and cool from.
While also expensive, the return can be a little
bit better then solar. Expect to pay 15,000 with
MD providing anywhere between a 1,000 and 3,000
rebate.
54You Save
- 935.25/yr.
- You Save the Earth
- 27,100 lbs of CO2
55- Replace Your Windows
- Energy Star Windows cost 20-50 more than
regular windows, because of their better
insulation and gas fill between panes. For
Pepcos rates, it would save 168.46 over a
single-pane window and 1602 lbs of CO2 a year,
and 36.10 and 343 lbs of CO2 over double-pane.
56- Get a New Kitchen
- By replacing major appliances, such as your
refrigerator, ovens, microwave, and dishwasher,
with high efficiency Energy Star rated
appliances, you could cut your operating cost in
half over the course of a year.
57- Buy a Laptop
- Before you march off to buy a new computer for
back to school, consider this a laptop uses up
to 75 less power then a Desktop. That could be a
savings of over 18 per year.
58Making a Better School Lunch
59The average school-age child who packs a lunch
for school generates 67 pounds of waste per
school year. That works out to 18,760 pounds of
lunch waste for just one average-size elementary
school. What can families do to reduce that
waste? Here are a few tips for packing a greener
lunchbox
60- Buy less prepackaged foods. This saves money and
is a healthier alternative. - If time is an issue, have your kids prepare their
own lunches the night before. This saves time in
the morning and makes the morning routine more
streamlined. - If you must buy prepackaged food, try to buy
containers that are made with less plastic. Deer
Park is a brand that uses 30 less plastic in
their bottles now than before. Do some research
to determine which mainstream companies are more
environmentally conscious. - Be sure to recycle all papers, plastics, and
drink containers.
615. Do not waste food. It will end up in the
landfill. Instead, collect food waste at the
school and compost it for the grounds. This
requires a bit of effort on the schools part but
is a great alternative to throwing food away. 6.
Pack stainless-steel utensils instead of using
disposable plastic. Find some cheap-yet-sturdy
flatware at a thrift store or yard sales for
school lunch purposes, then you can pack forks
and spoons without worrying about them getting
lost. 7. Replace paper napkins with cloth
ones. 8. Use reusable drink containers instead
of disposable juice boxes, juice pouches, cans,
and plastic bottles. Invest in a couple of good
stainless steel water bottles and use them only
for water. Theyll be a lot easier to clean that
way, and water is a healthier option than juice.
62- Avoid using plastic wraps, plastic bags,
wax-paper bags, and aluminum foil opt for bento
boxes instead. Bentos can be anything from fancy
containers you find at your local Japanese store
to the resealable containers you find on your
supermarket shelves. Get a couple of
sandwich-sized ones, some larger ones for packing
leftovers (get into the habit of packing lunches
at the dinner table for the next day), and
smaller snack-sized ones for packing dry snacks
or cut fruit or berries. - Cut down on packaging waste by purchasing foods
in larger containers that you can recycle at home
rather than buying many smaller packaged
products. - Choose lunch boxes or backpacks over paper or
plastic bags. Lunch boxes are back with a
vengeance. There are so many styles available now
that your kid should have no trouble picking a
lunch box that appeals to her. Be sure to check
that your lunch box doesnt contain lead.
63Get your child involved and interested in these
issues today. Its not to late to instill the
right kind of behavior that could save the world.
