1
February is . . . . .
  • Black History Month

2
What is slavery?
  • Slavery is when a person is owned by another
person and they can be sold at any time
  • When the slaves are sold, they can be separated
from their families and made to do very hard work
    for their master
  • These people were African Americans who were
treated this way just because they were black

3
The Civil War
  • In the North, the people were wealthy and did not
need slaves so they fought against slavery.
  • In the South, the people lived on farms and
relied on their slaves so they fought to keep
    slavery.

4
The Civil War (cont.)
  • Robert E. Lee was the general of the Confederates
(South) and on April 9, 1865, he surrendered to
Ulysses S. Grant who was the general of the Union
(North) and the war was ended.
  • The states were one nation again and the slaves
were freed, but people still had a hard time
treating African Americans like real people.

5
Underground Railroad
  • This was a secretive way that slaves could run
away to Canada and be free from slavery
  • It was called "underground" because it was an
    undercover or hidden operation.
  • It was called a "railroad" because of the many
trails, roads and highways that led travelers
    from south to north.

6
Abraham Lincoln
  • 16th President of the United States
  • Served 2 terms in office (1860 1865)
  • Gave the Emancipation Proclamation to free all
    slaves
  • Shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth on April
    14, 1865
  • I do order and declare that all persons held as
slaves within said designated States, and parts
of States, are, and henceforward shall be free
  • Emancipation Proclamation
  • January 1, 1863

7
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
  • I have a dream that my four children will one
day live in a nation where they will not be
judged by the color of their skin but by the
    content of their character.

8
Rosa Parks
  • Before the 1960s, African Americans could not do
many things that white people could, like sit in
the whites only section of the bus.
  • This woman refused to give up her seat on the
public bus to a white person and was arrested,
but she was willing to fight for what she
believed in no matter what happened to her.

9
Jackie Robinson
  • On April 15th, 1947, Robinson became the 1st
African American in the twentieth century to play
    baseball in the major leagues

I'm not concerned with your liking or disliking
me... All I ask is that you respect me as a human
being.
