Title: Hose Tools and Appliances

1
SOUTHERN AREA WILDLAND ENGINE ACADEMY
  • Hose Tools and Appliances

2
Objective
  • Familiarize trainees with the various types of
hose tools and appliances / fittings commonly
    used by the fire service

3
Tools - Function
  • To secure, couple, or tighten fire hose together
  • Or to connect hose to various types of appliances
    or sources

4
Tools - Design types
  • Spanner wrench
  • Hydrant wrench
  • Hose clamps
  • All in various types, sizes and shapes

5
Hose Appliances - Function
  • Appliances or fittings help transport water from
its source to the fire buy supplying a basic need
  • Connecting hose together and/or dividing one line
    into two
  • Examples adapters, couplings, wyes, foot valves,
    and others

6
Hose Appliances - Construction
  • Brass or aluminum alloy
  • Lugs provided for tightening and loosening using
    spanner wrenches
  • Higbee cut and Higbee notch assists in connecting
    fittings and prevents cross-threading
  • Notch shows where Higbee cut is 2

7
Higbee Cut and Notch
8
Hose Couplings Size
  • Larger sizes (2 1/2 ) used for drafting or if
enormous amounts of water or retardant is to be
    transported quickly
  • I.E. Airtanker bases and muck fires
  • 11/2 NH is most common, useful as trunk line in
    hose lays and structure protection
  • 1 used as work lines in hose lays and booster
    hose
  • 3/4 garden hose

9
Hose Appliances - Threads
  • Threads said to be Straight or Parallel
  • Water seal provided by gasket when two ends
    seated together
  • NH - National Hose thread. Used in fire
    protection and chemical
  • NPSH - National Pipe Standard Hose thread. Used
from straight pipe and for hose couplings and
    nipples

10
Hose Treads
  • GHT - Garden Hose thread
  • QT - Quarter Turn fittings
  • Quarter turns do not have male or female end,
line up notch and turn clockwise 1/4 turn to
    tighten
  • No threads to damage (except adapters)
  • Fitting is universal for 1 and 1 1/2
  • New Thread
  • Experimental combination of threads with open
areas, ¼ turn capable, with similar fittings -
or normal threaded fittings can screw all the way
    on

11
Thread Types
12
Hose Appliances
  • Divided into 4 Major Categories
  • Adapters
  • Hose couplings
  • Intakes
  • Service Fittings

13
Adapters
  • Connect two dissimilar hose fitting threads of
    the same diameter
  • Example 1.5 NH to 1.5 NPSH
  • Example 1.5 NH to Quarter Turn

14
Quarter Turns - Adapter/Connectors
15
Hose Couplings
  • Permanent part of hose
  • Female end (swivel) and Male end
  • Female ends have lugs (males ?)

16
Intakes
  • Foot valves
  • Ejectors w/ foot valve
  • Suction trainers
  • Gravity socks

17
Service Fittings
  • Double Females/ males
  • Increasers
  • Reducers
  • Hoseline tees
  • Hoseline tee valves

18
Service Fittings
  • Bleeder valves
  • Check valves
  • Pressure relief valves
  • Wyes
  • Siamese

19
Nozzles
  • Many varieties
  • Straight stream
  • Spray
  • Adjustable combination

20
Nozzles
  • Mop up wands
  • Foam nozzles

21
Cleaning Twin Tips
22
Care
  • Hose and Appliances very expensive
  • Avoid dropping or dragging appliances
  • Do not permit vehicles to drive over hoses
  • Examine and rehab appliance after use
  • Remove gaskets and free swivel in warm soapy
  • water
  • Clean threads of tar, dirt, gravel and oil
  • Replace gaskets if cracked or creased
