Title: Residential Electricity

1
Residential Electricity
  • Power to the People

2
Current
  • Electrical current is the flow of electrons in a
circuit. (like the water flowing through a hose)
  • Measured in amps
  • DC Direct current (car battery)
  • AC Alternating Current (homes)

3
Tools
  • pliers
  • screwdrivers
  • utility knives
  • wire stripers

4
Lets get BUSY!
5
Voltage
  • Potential energy difference in a circuit.
  • Measured in volts
  • (like the pump pushing the water through the hose)

6
Resistance
  • The measure of opposition to current flow within
    a circuit.
  • Measured in ohms
  • (like the friction in the hose as the water flows
    through it )

7
Conductor
  • Material that allows the flow of electrons easily
  • Examples metals such as copper and aluminum

8
Insulator
  • Material that opposes the flow of electrons
  • Examples Ceramics, glass

9
The Power Grid
  • Electrical power is like the air we breatheyou
dont really think about it until it is missing
  • Think about last summers power failure

10
We need power for.
  • Heating Lighting
  • Cooling Computing
  • Cooking Controls
  • Refrigeration Entertaining

11
Power Distribution Grid
  • Hydro power travels from the power plant to your
home through a system called the distribution grid

12
The Grid
13
The Power Plant
  • Hydroelectric plant
  • Dam
  • Waterfalls
  • River
  • Tidal

14
The Power Plant
  • Fuel Powered
  • Diesel
  • Gas Turbine
  • Coal Fired
  • Nuclear Reactor

15
The Power Plant
  • In all almost all cases the power plant consists
    of a spinning electrical generator

16
Hydroelectric Power Plant
17
Three-phase Power
  • Power plants produce
  • 3-phase power
  • Each surge of power is offset 120o

18
Single-phase Power
  • Homes run on only one of these three phases

-
19
At the House
  • The high voltage (7200volts) in the distribution
grid must be transformed to 240volts for use in a
    residence.

20
The Transformer
21
240v Electricity
  • Three wires enter the home.
  • One bare wire (ground).
  • Two Insulated wires each carrying 120v (180o out
    of phase)

22
240v Electricity
23
Hydro Meter
  • Utility companies charge for the amount of
    electricity that you use

24
Service Panel
  • Main Breaker
  • Bus bars (2 line, 1 neutral)
  • Fuses or circuit breakers
  • Separates into circuits
  • 110 and 220 volts circuits

25
Electrical Devices
  • Duplex receptacle
  • Appliances
  • Lights

26
Duplex Outlet
  • Neutral Line
  • white wire black wire
  • Ground
  • bare copper

27
Continuity
  • These three wires must run in a continuous
    circuit.
  • white wires attach to white (silver screws)
  • black wires attach to black (brass screws)
  • ground wires attach to ground wires (green
    screws)

28
Install an Outlet
  • Our first device we will install is the duplex
    receptacle.
