Title: Still think we have a ban on tobacco advertising

1
Still think we have a ban on tobacco advertising?
2
The tobacco industry comments on Powerwall bans
  • ..the store environment, especially displays
inside stores, is the biggest source of
    advertising awareness for all cigarette
    trademarks.
  • - Market study done by American tobacco company
    Brown and Williamson

3
  • Saskatchewan is the most restrictive
environment in the world for tobacco marketing.
    -British American Tobacco executives
  • Cigars are an adult product. I dont see them
    stopping their consumptionbut some consumers
when they see a cigar on a shelf will try it.  If
they cannot see it, impulse purchases will happen
less.-Andre Blais, marketing director for Old
    Port Cigar Company

Recap what weve heard
  • Evidence is clear tobacco displays are without a
    doubt advertising
  • The current display restrictions in NZ are weak
and ineffectual, and compliance is spotty at best
  • Retailers, particularly convenience store owners
and petrol stations will be our biggest foes in
banning a display ban, why? Because it will
    reduce cigarette sales and profits!

5
NZ at the back of the pack
  • NZ is at the back of the pack when it comes to
restricting the display of tobacco at retail
  • The single weakest link of the NZ ban on
    advertising
  • There is a giant billboard for tobacco on every
    corner, in every town

6
Bring Down the PowerwallFor smokers trying to
quit
  • I heard a smoker who was trying to quit say
that it was so much easier to go into a service
station. You dont see cigarettes and want to buy
    them.
  • - Donna Wolfe, Weyburn, Saskatchewan

7
Bring Down the PowerwallFor youth taking up
smoking
  • "They are called power walls for good reason.
They are Big Tobaccos best marketing tool to
reach a new generation of young smokers."
  • - Dr. Robert Cushman, Canadian Council for
    Tobacco Control

Bring down the Powerwall
  • Other countries have banned retail displays of
tobacco. A ban on retail displays would simplify
compliance with the legislation. The current
display restriction, in addition to being a
successful opportunity to keep advertising, makes
compliance difficult and is vulnerable to
    exploitation.
