1
Art on Campus PaperJing XuFall 2006
2
  • Your paper will share the description of the art
    with others in your group
  • The rest of the paper (orienting, significance of
location, focus, and conclusion) is yours

3
Introduction (Orienting/Forecasting) Paragraph
  • Introduce the art, artist, and maybe the location
    of the piece
  • State one or two basic descriptive facts about it
  • State what YOUR focus in the analysis will be

4
An introduction orients the reader to what is
coming it makes implicit promises.
  • DO identify the object (what it is, who created
it, where it is, what its title is)
  • DO state your focus (thesis)
  • DONT make announcements In this essay I will
describe the Kurt Anderson mural in the library
and tell you what I find meaningful about it.

5
Ideas for your individual papers focus
  • something about the piece that attracted your
    attention immediately, or
  • something about it that grew on you, or
  • something about it that you didnt notice at
first or that came to mean something different to
you the more you looked at it, or
  • something that you find puzzling but interesting
  • Note These may all be connected to the pieces
location on campus, though not necessarily.

6
Stick to Description and your Focus
  • We all react to art differently, so your focus is
not I like it or I dont like it.
  • Instead, stick with description of the piece, its
placement (how it fits in where it is), and your
    focus.

7
Paragraphs 2-3
  • Full description of the piece, including
  • what it is (sculpture? mural? textile?), what it
is made of, what its main colors are, and
anything else that is important about how it
    looks
  • You will be combining your own description with
possible material from the University Museums
    website
  • You will collaborate to write this do not have
one person write it for all of you. I realize
there will be some similarities in your
    descriptions.

8
Images and Labeling
  • Try to include a picture of the object. Follow
instructions from class about placing, labeling,
    and referring to the image.
  • Madonna of the Prairie Christian Petersen
  • http//www.museums.iastate.edu/Tests/AOCFactSheetT
    EST.htm

9
Paragraphs 3-4(may be part of your focus
material)
  • Discuss why the piece is located where it is how
    is its location significant?
  • You may need to understand some ISU history
and/or know about the building where the art is
    installed.

Paragraph 4-5 Your Focus
  • Develop one of the focus ideas from the
    assignment sheet
  • something that caught your eye in the piece right
    away
  • something surprising or odd about the piece
  • something that came to have a different meaning
to you the more you thought about it

12
Conclusion
  • Not a simple repeating of first paragraph
  • No new material
  • A meaningful wrap-up of your discussion of the
art and your focus on that art
