- Lawhelp is the Help Desk component of the Law
Schools Computing Services department. - We provide students with comprehensive support
for
Software and services needed to fulfill academic
responsibilities
Issues that affect the stability and security of
the UW network

7CC vs. Lawhelp
- UW Technology (formerly CC)
Supports computing resources that are used by all
UW schools (not just the Law School).
Responsible for what goes on "behind the scenes"
with the UW network, including email accounts
ending in 'u.washington.edu,' and UW NetIDs.
Lawhelp UW Law School computer support
Supports computing resources that are used solely
by the Law School.
Acts as a liaison between Law School students and
UW Tech for some networking and UWNetID-related
issues.
8Patching Your Computer
- Before using the UW network...
- Windows Vista users
- Visit http//update.microsoft.com
- Windows XP users
- Install Service Pack 3 visit http//update.micros
oft.com - Users of earlier Windows versions
- Upgrading is strongly recommended!
- OS X users
- Check Software Update (in the Apple menu) for any
security-related updates
9Passwords
- Although passwords are the most important link in
the computing security chain, they are often the
weakest. - A strong password
- Is at least eight characters long
- Uses numbers, special characters (such as
!,_at_,,,,, etc), and case-sensitive letters - Avoids the consecutive repetition of a character
- Avoids using obvious passwords like your last
name, birthday, etc. - Is actually a passphrase, including punctuation
and spaces - Dont share your password with anyone!
10Antivirus software
- Uninstall your current antivirus software and
install McAfee VirusScan (for Windows and/or OS
X) instead.
Most preinstalled antivirus programs are trial
versions - once it expires, you have to pay for a
subscription to keep it updated
Updates are free while youre at the UW

13Wireless Network Access
Wireless access is available throughout all of
William Gates Hall.
You will be prompted to login with your UW NetID
when a website outside of the washington.edu
domain is first accessed.
Your network connection will be disabled by UW
Tech if your system negatively impacts the UW
network in some way contact Lawhelp if this
occurs.
14Wireless Printing
- You can wirelessly print to the Law Schools two
pay-per-job Pharos printers - Room 222 (Law School computer lab)
- Floor L1, Library Copy Alcove

15Using a computer on an exam
- In order to use your computer on an exam, the Law
School requires you to secure it with ExamSofts
SofTest software. - ExamSoft software requires Microsoft Windows, and
does not work within any Mac OS version,
including OS X.
16Using a computer on an exam
- If you have a Macintosh laptop with Intel-based
hardware, you can run Examsoft within Microsoft
Windows (XP and Vista) via Boot Camp. - At this time ONLY Boot Camp is allowed no other
dual boot or virtualization software is permitted
on a Mac laptop which is used for an exam.
