Infrastructure Showstoppers
  • Two key issues were identified as a real threat
    to infrastructure
  • Moving energy of Long Distances Moving energy
    (electricity, natural gas, etc.) around the US
    the grid can not handle this nor a possible
    pipelines. (this will be impacted by future
    regulation on grid systems etc.)
  • Cost/Benefits Cost is an incredible challenge.
    e.g. transition of the massive infrastructure is
    a daunting challenge. Cost minimization across
    the value chain is needed!

  • Material Needs Pose Major Challenges Material
    Science Challenges
  • Hydrogen Storage Options The storage problem is
    a critical element, maybe a showstopper of the
    value train, (obviously a cross cutting issue,
    just as the production is also a cross-cutting
    issue)
  • Centralized vs local productions and implication
    on infrastructure.
  • Example
  • More cost effective LH2 production
  • Higher efficient electrolysers
  • Scalable production

Key research areas
  • Carriers
  • Need to be addressed as i.e. looking at all the
    different possible feedstocks from the starting
    point
  • Infrastructure design
  • System and Integrated Modeling Modeling and
    optimizing the critical elements of the hydrogen
    system and for the plausible futures (integrated
    models and to do What if ? studies and to
    compare to now), assessing the potential barriers
    and fast tracking opportunities, e.g., modeling
    the infrastructure (10-30-50 years), the grid,
    pipelines, etc.

Cross disciplinary field of H2
  • Strategy Basic disciplinary RD and enhanced
    emphasis on integrated, cross-cutting studies,
    the whole system, the possible sensitivities,
    optimization etc.
  • Integrate with Social Sciences Opportunities are
    there for research societal integration issues

Education
  • Education, first responder (safety), agencies
    responsible for giving different permits? (local
    authorities, government etc), public acceptance
    (perceptions vs reality), and most importantly
    next generation of professionals and citizens
    knowledgeable about the new energy epoch.
    Introduce at all levels of our school system.
  • Is our current description of the hydrogen
    technology too complex?

Other issues
  • Facilitate International Cooperation Make it far
    easier to multi-national projects. Create
    pathways to interact with current international
    setting, i.e. the IEA hydrogen implementation
    Agreement, IPHE, European Advisory Council,
    Arctic Council, etc.
  • Single point of funding for multinational
    projects benefiting cross boundary fundamental
    research
  • Feedback Loops, Open Channels of Communications
    between the Academy and Practice
